Bob, it is polls like this which show a majority of Americans want fairness and feity to ideals which give me a glimmer of hope about Americans.

But it blows me away that there are 23% of Americans who don’t give a shit if the Supreme Court has a code of ethics. Almost 1 in 4. WTF?

I’m not surprised by it. I would be surprised if 1 n 4 Americans actually know the role of the Supreme Court.

Doing what is right for constituents and the country and not what is personally best for candidates or parties. Who is doing that and who is not.

It is typical that the Democratics try to propose fair legislation and the Republicans try to stop it, but if they can't they try to say it is partisan and use that attack to tilt the resulting law in their favor.

Wouldn't surprise me if laws were passed to help prevent their corruption and they try to claim they can still be corrupt because they are grandfathered in to the old non-existent laws.

These likely voters say they want these things, but when it comes down to it, probably close to half would easily turn a blind eye in the context of specific issues they support, such as gutting roe, presidential immunity, removing Chevron, etc.  don't forget that a good portion of these people have deluded themselves to the great extent that they think they are honest, good, decent people who support this country and her constitution.  But reality tells a different story when you quit listening to what they say and start paying attention to their actions, which are antithetical to the good decent american virtues they think they have.

Polls won't capture that sort of nuance.  It's more a reflection of how people see themselves than how people actually are and those two things can be vastly different or opposed

Before the court went completely off the rails, it jumped the shark when it elected GW, most people didn't think about it much.

Now that it overturned Roe & make the President immune to the laws people are more aware...

As overturning Cheveron begins to polute our environment and take more rights away from the 99% people may become more aware, or not.

And I'm telling you, a good portion of our country are in fact more aware as you say thanks to roe et al, support what the court did, on paper think things like supreme Court reform for stuff like ethics and term limits is a good idea because they think highly of themselves as some kind of anti corruption force for good in this country, but then will gladly support Republicans that vote those good things down because they are happy with the result. All that to say, the poll is misleading as it will be widely assumed that those people will back up what they are saying with their vote, but they will not. In conclusion, Republicans are largely a bunch of liars and think highly of themselves but their actions don't support the way they see themselves

Jesus, is that a threat?

Is he honestly pandering to republicans like this to put down the movement of supreme court ethics reform? How completely unethical and political.

I think everyone needs to prepare themselves that potentially this election has already been determined.

Never have the down ballot races been more important. I’d bet a dollar to a donut the outcome in certain states (looking at you GA, AZ, FL, WI, PA, NC,) are sending this to congress to decide if Harris wins them. The supreme has signaled they’re fine with it and people are slinging the words “we’re a republic, not a democracy”, around.

In a call with donors, First Liberty Institute’s Kelly Shackelford read the supportive email he said came from Thomas. The leader of the religious-rights group also labeled Justice Elena Kagan “treasonous” for backing a stronger ethics code.

Court reform is badly needed now that the "right" has packed the courts with judges whose allegiantments are to the power of the wealthy and far right wing catholics.

Depressing thought of the day...

Donald Trump appointed three Supreme Court justices as president. If he wins next week, he may get more appointments than Kamala Harris would have gotten.

History suggests one reason: In recent years, judges have tended to retire in time to let the president they prefer fill their seats. The oldest sitting justices today — Clarence Thomas, 76, and Samuel Alito, 74 — are Republican appointees. If they stepped down during a second Trump administration, the president could choose younger replacements who would cement conservative control of the court for decades.

I realize that we're beyond the point of logic and reason with a certain ilk in America, but imagine applying for a job to stock shelves at Meijer and you mentioned that you had been convicted of 34 felonies.

I suspect you wouldn't get a job stocking shelves at Meijer.

Just brought that up with my wife the other day as to why Trump needs to not get elected. Not only will he be our president for another four years, but if he appoints anymore supreme court justices they could well be making decisions negatively affecting our granddaughter's children's lives and for years afterwards. Granddaughter is technically 9 (in her words)

Not going to happen as Harris has this one wrapped up, but hypothetically, if Trump won he would replace Thomas, Aletio & at least one liberal justice...and now that I think about it, probably Roberts in 2028.

I do not give the slightest little bit of shit about the contents of that link

You don't care that our supposed "constitutional originalist" supreme court members, who have taken oaths to this country and its constitution, are suddenly taking oaths requiring them to literally do the bidding of foreign influence explicitly made illegal by the constitution?

Not really, no.

There are a lot of truly awful things that that guy has done. Doing some stupid ceremonial bullshit somewhere that doesn’t really mean anything is absolutely not in the too 20. Who gives a shit

Okay, and judges ideally rule on how existing law applies to actions in the present time.  One of the foundations of existing law is the Constitution, which judges are supposed to know, and follow,  by heart.  As has been said, a man cannot follow two masters.

Yeah man, sure, totally. Worst thing alito has done. That’s definitely what I would talk about when pointing out he’s a bad guy. That he did some ceremonial bullshit. Not the hundreds of country destroying rulings. It’s this.

Isn't it all part of who he is?

Why ignore his ignoring the Constitution in this case, too?  He should be at least shamed for this.

This is one of those reaching to find something and sounding like a lunatic instead of just taking the obvious things sitting in front of you. People on the internet do that a lot. That’s why this story is appearing on something called above the law.blogspot.org.edu.com instead of a real source.

Flying a flag upside down because his preferred right wing lunatic didn’t win the election, story. Doing some ceremonial bullshit, not a story. Glad I could help explain this for you.

If it was your kid, you have a point.

Having one of the top judges in the country ignoring a clear clause in the Constitution is something else. He is being rightly called out for it.

JFC Trav, do you feel you have to attack every post I make?
