We also have Illinois and Indiana and Michigan in the top 25. I anticipate at least 2 of those 3 to be out of the top 25 at the end of the year.

Kirby is frustrated. Had another player arrested last week. Brutal stretch of Texas, Florida, Ole Miss, and Tennessee coming up.

That seems to be their strategy for most (or all) of their off field problems.
Whatever discipline they're using, isn't working.
Maybe a byproduct of NIL influence. Players think they can do what they want with no consequences.
Losing will increase scrutiny, and if they lose to Texas and Tennessee (or Florida), they should/could miss the CFP. That won't go over well.

Currently the flag is thrown but any time that’s run off during the play isn’t restored.
So the defense burns time off the clock (4-7 seconds) and it costs them a 5 yd penalty.
New rule offense isn’t losing time of possession because the clock is restored to when the flagged play began and the defense gives away 5 yards.

You can really only do that if you make it a dead ball foul and whistle the play dead at the snap. Â Which they could, like how offside is whistled dead if a player is unimpeded to the QB at the snap.GRR Spartan wrote:I think the too many players on the field on the defense rule will be changed for the 2025 season.

This is a good time to remind everyone of Michigan's too many men penalty on the final drive in 2001. Because it's always a good time to remember. Â Yes, we lost the time that the play took, which was right. Â But then the clock didn't stop with a flag on the play and we had to call a timeout 3 seconds after the play ended. Â We didn't get those 3 seconds back, nor did we get the timeout back. Â Oh, and the refs also marked off the penalty from the result of the play...which was a sick, so we lost yardage on the UM penalty, too. Â Up there with Nebraska's 5th down as one of the single biggest officiating flubs in decades. Â But dipshits gonna cry to this day about whether the ball was spiked before or after :01 became :00.

I don’t doubt the explanation. It clearly didn’t look intentional. But it is an excuse and there is no excuse for pushing an opposing player. Period. Control yourself. I don’t want his head, but he should be punished some manner. Hefty fine or game suspension.

And then, after Oregon’s Dan Lanning’s presser where he said the 12 men was intentional, there was this:

“After the Two-Minute Timeout in either half, if the defense commits a substitution foul and 12 or more players are on the field and participate in a down, officials will penalize the defense for the foul and at the option of the offended team, reset the game clock back to the time displayed at the snap,” the guidance said.

It’s no different than when many of us taught and were taught to take a 15 yard interference penalty than getting beat for 40 plus in the air. Is it rare you’d tackle someone who juked you and was running open with ball in air so you’re desperate? Sure. Does it happen? Yep. You exploit a rule.

Re: 2024 General College Football Thread
It was a Heads I win / Tails you lose rule for the defense before the change. A defense could make an "error" or two when the offense was at the 50 or further back to keep the offense out of FG range.
Don't blame Lanning for taking advantage of the existing rule.
As DWags mentioned, pass defense in college is 15 yards or spot of the foul if its less than 15 yards. So if you are getting beat long, better to interfere.
We now have a two minute time in the 2nd and 4th quarter like the NFL's Two Minute Warning. Won't be surprised to see the NCAA move to the NFL rule for pass interference in the next 2-3 years too.

Yep, that’s been talked about by broadcast teams for years. It’s a last chance strategic move, and it’s not like intentionally fouling is exclusive to football.

I’ve never understood “half the distance” penalties. If you commit a personal foul on your own 14 then put the ball on the one yard line, not the 7.

They probably won't face a ranked team until the ACC title game if they make it there.
Louisville has a good offense, but Miami's poor/soft tackling reminds me of the spread teams of 20 years ago.

The ground can cause an incompletion. Why not a fumble?

That one makes sense to me, because if you have possession then you're down when you hit the ground. At least in college. The only way you wouldn't be down is if you are carrying the ball in one hand and use that to brace yourself and keep from falling and the ball pops out.Heat Miser wrote:DWags wrote:

Which I think happened to Bryan Hoyer maybe against UM? I don't even remember how they ruled that, however.

Houser’s stats looked good in a losing cause. 24/39 282 yds averaging just over 7 ypc. 3TDs, I INT.
