In Travis defense, I think he was sharp enough as a 27 plus year old to probably recognize a scam, so when he  jumps to generalizations he naively assumes many must be like that.  But they aren’t.  

Also, my advantage is that I have kids who 27 & 23.   Most of their friends and themselves were great college students who are doing pretty headsy stuff right now.  And when their gang  comes over and we’re having some cocktails and I’m in the presence of master degrees a phd here or there and a few CPA’s who are way smarter than I, I can’t believe how stupid they are.  

Funny stupid.  Naively stupid.   Plenty of stories about getting ripped off by internet hucksters and Facebook market place gangsters.  

I’m 95% sure I’d have been suckered had the sophistication been around when I was their age.  

My 87 year old mom called me crying because she wasn’t thinking and gave her SS number to a guy o er the phone. So we have her on life lock.  I’m sure my daughters will suffer a loss, but hope they won’t.


But no way do the internet gangsters not spread a wide net that captures many age groups.  I’m happy I’m so poor.  Shit doesn’t effect me.

Yeah, I know some of the stories are true after 20 years of paying $700 dollars a month on a 130 k lian they still owe 110k or something like that.   I have no idea if those stories are true and I’m sure many fall into that minimum payment loan.  I’m also not here to place blame, but I’m shocked that, after a mega bank has got their money back plus half again the Main Street people in America side with the banks.  “It’s the kids fault”. “They should know”.  Shit line that.  Pay a bank $150k on a $100k loan and car salesmen, night club workers, appliance salesmen, store owners, small business people, real estate salesmen don’t side with a student who could put 700 bucks a month into the economy, but these people want the big banks to have it.  

Maybe I’m off base but that’s how it seems to me.  I’m not for whipping the slate cleaner but maybe make a rule that if you’ve doubled the banks money, you’re clear.  But if they wipe out all loans I’m not pissed at these kids because I didn’t get some, I’m happy for them.  Spend that money kids.

Except it’s not even the big banks that get the money, it’s the government. All that extra interest that students have to pay is effectively just an extra tax levied only on college grads, which is absurd. The idea is that you go to college and you make more money, and generally that’s true. The governments incentive to finance that for you is extra revenue vis income tax. But with insane student loan terms, they’re effectively double dipping specifically on only that subset of people which is absurd.

We’ve been over this 1000 times so I don’t know why I’m bothering, but no, you do not need to pay for student loan forgiveness. No one does. It’s not an expense to the government. People stop paying, that’s it. Nothing goes out.
