I thought Trump would win GA vs. Biden (and he still might vs. Harris), but attacking a Governor (Kemp) who is more popular (than Trump) is a strange tactic.

In case any of you haven't noticed, it's quite clear that Trump's strategy revolves around eyes being on him, even if they are on him for good or for bad.

Since Kamala has taken the media by storm, he's been nervous.  He's desperately trying to recapture the spotlight by any means necessary and that means doing and saying some rather outrageous things.

First came the "black jobs" interview at the journalist convention.  Now his rally in Georgia where he insults a popular governor.  Kemp is not a good person but Georgians like him for some reason.  He's like a desantis-lite but with a (very slightly) little more natural ability to consider the non-republicans in his state.

Trump will not do that. He will simply use dog whistle language alluding to it and it will have similar effect. Remember - he works in a grey area of "plausible deniability". To any normal person that opposes him, black, white, brown, whatever, the dog whistle language is seen as highly intentional and thus as bad as saying the N word itself. But to any person that slightly likes him, he didn't say the N word and all the dog whistle language is designed for the expressed purpose of conveying racism in public but while also having deniability because the dog whistle language all started and has non-racist origins. They support him at least a little so they either understand his racism and like it or they don't and give him the benefit of the doubt because he didn't actually say the bad words. But as we all know, the order that words are spoken matters, the demeanor and context matters, and that's what gives these normally innocuous language racist meaning.

Trump will ramp up his racist rhetoric to be sure but that just means being a little more overt and disrespectfully aggressive with the minorities at various key moments. He pleases his core which will help turnout and he creates media waves which puts the eyes on him. Both plusses to him.
