How long before DeSantis flips from his rugged independent/Climate Change is a myth persona to we need help from Washington.

Should we automatically help any state that gets hit with a natural disaster? Yes, of course. But maybe don't rage against the machine every second of every other day when that machine can and will help you in the future when you inevitably get plastered by a hurricane.

Eh, I'm gonna bet against Idaho getting hit by a hurricane and needing federal assistance, but with this darn global warming, I guess anything is possible.

It’s time for thought and prayers and pack your guns.
Always ironic to see the self-proclaimed “conservative libertarian” schticks trying to claim the high road when governors of states like FL, LA, and TX flip the “We’re all Americans” deficit spending be damned switch when it’s their state’s bacon in the fire.
Every state should get the same all hand on deck response from the Federal government when hit by natural disasters.

I do feel like at some point the market will start to price people out of places like Florida via insurance, etc. it's got to be trending more and more towards corporate landlord ownership in high risk areas as single families will have trouble affording to live there.

The way they're now developing swampland and leaving no place for the water to go everyone is going to need flood insurance.

This is so funny to me. I'm on NextDoor. FEMA just added a bunch of people to a flood zone. Its in western Miramar and Pembroke. These fucking people. I've been here 27 years and never needed flood insurance, now I'min a flood zone and my mortgage company is telling me I have to get flood insurance. Global warming is a myth, they are just getting rich. Now I have to get coverage that is $550 a year!!Jake from State Farm wrote:sεяεηιτλ wrote:

My thoughts: You live in a really nice suburb, if $50 a month extra is going to kill you, how do you afford to live there already? All it takes is one band of storms not moving for 5 hours and suddenly you are in a flood zone. Also, they keep building new subdivisions. You are right, there is no where for the water to go.

InTenSity,
Ask Houston, they’ve had problems.
One toney subdivision’s solution? They dried their homes out, called in house movers who lifted their homes moved them back then drilled 30” diameter footers 20’ down poured so new footers are 60”-72” high, moved the homes back and constructed new drives and steps. Not everyone has an extra $75-$100K to pull that off.
Florida’s biggest issue is, like Houston, the population has exploded over the last 50 years. In 1970 it was 6.79M by 2020 it was 21.5 and 2023 it was 22.3M. 325% population grown that’s eaten up a lot of the lowlands that storms rainfall used to drain.

Re: Helene heading towards Gulf Coast FL with surges 12 to 20 feet
yeah that is also crazy. Florida is also going to have a huge salt water problem, salt water is slowly encroaching into the water table which will be problematic in many different waysJake from State Farm wrote:sεяεηιτλ wrote:

People in general suck at managing water. Developments NEED water mitigation plans. It has to safely go somewhere. You cover everything with a building and concrete and you're just sending the entirety of the rainfall off your property.

Not sure where you are at but I've seen some really small streams flood like crazy and into houses around lansing.

I'm reading these stories about people needing help from the hurricane, I'm struggling to understand why people didn't leave that were near the path?
This hurricane did seem to come on more quickly than others that get tracked from hundreds of miles away. I think basically because it was a tropical storm then suddenly picked up strength in the gulf to hurricane status. But geez, you'd think by now people would have a plan to pick up and leave if a hurricane is near. At this point i'm not surprised insurance is going through the roof. So much of the population lives in irresponsibly built communities. We've covered the barrier islands with cities that would protect the mainland a bit from hurricanes. Just stupid overall planning. Florida coast is going to have to become a place for tourists and rich people that can afford the insurance. Everyone else should evacuate inland or to other states. It's just too dangerous and too costly.

Did they click their heels together and say,
There's no Global Climate Change, There's no Global Warming.
But sometimes weather patterns change because Global Climate Change and Global Warming are real.
And they've all been gorging on Trump's denial shit sandwiches.
