In Michigan you can vote straight ticket and still mark individual races, it's called mixed voting and according to the instructions in my absentee ballot it is allowed.

For write in votes, they don't count unless the person you write in is registered as a write in candidate.

True story. I used to work for Rich and Jay during summers when I was at MSU. Worked grounds and gardens at their property in Ada. Their houses were next to one another along with a guest house.
