So, speaking of, I had meniscus surgery, still had pain probably arthritis... the doc gave me a cortisone shot, the pain went away, but it's coming back. The guy said the shots usually last 3 weeks to 3 months... I'm on like month 4 probably, trying to fight through without getting another... Do I have to just accept the fact of quarterly shots until a knee replacement?
I was hoping hard work would win the day. Not looking good.

I don't know the specifics, but from what I recall Cortisone shots are just a mask, they don't actually heal the area. I've also heard that the effectiveness wears off the more you do. So use it wisely.

I need it for my shoulder (I still lift heavy like a dumbass), but I've been reluctant to start. I just adjust my workouts, manage the pain, ice, etc. I am getting to the point where it is becoming harder to manage though.

yeah, those trail runners are an odd bunch. Wink

I'm jealous, though, that you can hit the AT. It runs right through good 'ol Haywood County, over by Fines Creek.

I see where that is. Been up around the Balsam Mountain / Ravenfork area back in the day.

This stuff today is prolly in one of the less remote parts of the AT in bootbuster territory. Almost up north but not up north by eastern standards.

A long AT backpack trip is on my bucket list. Would love to hear some suggested routes for a week-ish trip.

CaptainSlow33 wrote:I've been trying to get back into a consistent routine. Tuesdays and Thursdays are my gym days. I'll typically warm up on the treadmill for 30 minutes (I try to do a combination of running and incline walking). After that, I head over to the weight area and...try my best? Back when I was fit in college (20 years ago...oof...), I'd go to the gym with my stepbrother, and he knew what we needed to be doing. Now I feel like I'm just kind of flailing. I figure that if I'm doing it right, I'll eventually get swoll. If I'm doing it wrong, I'll at least feel a post work out pain that makes me feel like I did something. After that, I'll go hard on the stair climber until I feel like I'm going to fall off of it, and then I'll cool down on either the exercise bike or an elliptical.

Monday, Wednesday, Friday are for walks around the neighborhood to keep my steps up. Weekends are for hikes, weather permitting. So far seems to be working ok.

One quick tip. Burn your carbs after you lift, not before. 10 min warmup on the tready and then lift. If you need more treadmill time, add another 20-30 mins after your lift. You want to be muscles to be fresh to get the most out of a lift.

As far as what to do, what is your goal? Bigger, faster/fitter, stronger? Pick one-ish. Without getting too advanced you can't accomplish all three. Focus on one (maybe two) and alternate every 6-8 weeks if needed. Set a goal for each period. Is it a strength gain goal? A muscle gain goal? An overall fitness gain? Based on your "flailing" comment, it sounds like this is your starting point. It is easy to get lost in the maze of equipment and moving stuff around without purpose or gain.

Goals can be simple. They don't need to be "I wanna bench 450". It can be as simple as "I wanna gain a little muscle", "get a little stronger", etc.

I wish I could help, but it has literally been decades since I've been on the AT. Rick would be a good resource, it seems like.

my only advice, for the purpose of nostalgia and my love of the area would be north Georgia into North Carolina. Maybe along the trail around the Nantahala National Forest by Franklin and up to Fontana Lake.

Just FYI I am the wrong guy to ask that question.  The most full-time length I have ever done is in GSMNP and it is awesome but also very popular.  Too many rocks and roads in MD/PA so I wouldn't suggest that.

If I'm guessing, the stretch just prior to GSMNP (Nantahala as Bob mentioned) and the stretch after GSMNP all the way to Mt Rogers and beyond is probably similar to the best.  I'd start looking there if I was looking. Great resources linked, Bob.

The AT has the cachet (and for a reason) but there are plenty of great week-long routes designable in and around GSMNP that would get less traffic and also make water access a lot easier than it is on the AT.

My knees are bad. They were so bad at one point I couldn't sleep at night for more than an hour at a time. Finally found a Dr who did cortisone shots. Yes, they mask it, but its taken the pain away, yes they have diminishing returns as well. This first one is more or less a trial to see how long it lasts, its been around 3-4 months and the pain hasn't come back as bad as it was. That being said, I really dropped off the exercise and gained back about 15-20lbs in the last year. I am a bit concerned that my knee is going to get back to being as bad as it was. Flip side, I'm sure my blood work isn't going to look that great either. Getting old sucks. hah!

Which leads to something else ive been thinking about... Anyone try yhe fatty drugs? If i can't fight through it with working out and the stupid diets are just a yoyo mess, maybe the brand new cheater drugs would help.

Couple of dog walks and got the new bicycle out for a test drive with the kid. She was home for spring break and we rode around the block. Made my day.

7 miles on the stationary + 3 miles on the treadmill this morning, probably hike 8-9 miles tomorrow and another 8-9 on Sunday.

Finally got outside on the bike last Monday and ripped off 22 miles with about 900's of elevation.

I do 3 sets of 40 pushups. A 5 min ab workout from the youtubes and 30 min on the treadmill usually ending in 2 + miles with an elevation. (Getting a knee shot next week, maybe i can run again?)

ugh, yeah, that can be problematic.

might be more difficult for you, as well, with the kids. That's one thing I don't have these days, really, are other things pulling me in different directions. For the most part, I don't have a lot to do except what I want to do (which can make me a little sad, too - don't wish time away and enjoy every minute).

(sorry for the unsolicited lecture).

hopefully you can dig into some motivation - find it somewhere. It's there, you might just have to dust if off a bit. Other things, justifiably, take precedent, but stay strong, Dendro. Be a good example for the girls - maybe somehow work them into a workout periodically (Not all the time - you need that time for yourself, too) - but let them see a strong woman in action. Wink

Zero chance my knees and back would let me do that. I moved ten yards about six years ago, but wisely did it over three days and my back still hated me.

Will start cycling when I get my bike back from getting a tuneup, but that won’t be for a few weeks yet since I haven’t taken it in for a tuneup.

Well, I bought it from Central Park Bikes 25-ish years ago. If they’re still open, maybe there. I think there’s a trek store somewhere between here and Okemos, unless that’s what turned into Soldan’s.

I’m the one wearing the black balaclava in the middle of a hot day. Gotta stay anonymous and there’s too many nosy neighbors with ring cams these days.

I know the owner of Central Park Bikes died not too long ago, but I'm not surprised that the store is still open. They do a good business - I bought a Specialized bike from there maybe 8-10 years ago.

I've been going to Spin in Old Town since Hunter closed Evergreen on Grand River. Spin is a pretty good store and I've been impressed with the owner. I think his name is Chad.

I used to go to Velocipede but that closed a few years ago. Bought my first real bike there in 9th grade. Before that it was kids bikes or hand-me-downs. I think the brand of the bike was called SR.

My forearms arm smoked today. Back feels good, which is more important.
