I remember my dad took me to some cool fort that was used for a war back in the day. Or something like that. They had good fudge. I actually got lost for a bit. My parents freaked out.

you and I will always be on good terms..

I might dig it up there in the winter. Are the people there in the winter? If so, are they the same goobers that are there in the summer? That would likely be a deal breaker.

Bob -
You should go, the trick is to spend a night or two on the island. When all the day-trippers (aka Fudgies) leave on their boat it is actually fairly quiet. The bike paths are not crowded, it is easy to get around (or over) the island on the pavement or there are some unpaved trails/paths if that is more of your thing.
You can see the forts, the cemetery and breath fresh air and there are a few bars around the Island that are decent.

Of course the combined stench of lilac, fudge and horseshit will forever remind you of Mackinac.

What I don't understand is why you're scared off by a few rocks and cold water. Why are you scared of nature?

I worked at the island for a summer right after graduating high school. First I worked at Ryba's fudge - I was a fudge cook. To this day, damn near 40 years later, I still won't eat that shit. Then I was a dish washer at Little's Bob's.

You tourists can make fun of going there, but I can tell you the summer of '76 was one of the best summers of my life. I loved it up there.
Back in '07, took my kids up there and showed them where I lived. Even tho it had been 21 years, the people who owned the house still remembered me and welcomed my entire family in. Loved the view every morning leaving that house.

When you're my age, losing 10 years might be a good thing. Meant to say '97, instead of 07, but either way it seems like yesterday. At least I can still remember it, Alzheimers be damned!
