He is technically the only coach to move on to another head coaching gig. If you take out interims then the only thing you have is Jim Schwartz who played head coach mode on Madden 15 with the Saints.

Yeah, but Fontes is the only coach to ever take the Lions to the NFC Championship game...he also went to the playoffs 3 other times.

Caldwell isn't the issue. Its Bill Ford's friends, Lewand (Lions President) and Mayhew. (Lions GM)Its late.

I'm lazy so here's my rant from the game thread. (Cut and paste)

Stafford has had little time or no time again and the OLine can't runblock to save their lives.

At some time Lewand and Mayhew have to go. They have been part of the braintrust making Stafford the #1 pick overall in '09 signing him to a 7 year, $53M guaranteed initial contract and signed him to his $53M 3 yr extension contract, $41.5M guaranteed with a $27.5M signing bonus and haven't been drafting a line that could protect the QB. Even when stats show Stafford's play when pressured has a major drop off compared to other NFL QB's getting similar money.

Why you take a QB at #1 overall to build your team around and go for a cut rate OLine is a mystery. Of the 18 players the Lions have drafted in the first 3 rounds (After taking Stafford) plus getting 2 first rounders in '09 there hasn't been much to build around Stafford. They have drafted a total of 2 OLine players in the first 3 picks including the '09 draft.

Same year they drafted Stafford #1 overall they took Pettigrew (TE) 1st rd 20th and passed on Michael Oher (OT) (who was taken at #23 by Baltimore). Their 3rd pick in the '09 draft was Delmas (S) 2nd rd 33rd and they took Levy (LB) 3rd rd 57th pick.

Here's the Lions first 3 players taken in the following years
2010 Suh (DL) 1st rd 2nd pick , Best (RB) 1st rd 30th, Spievey (CB) 3rd rd 66th pick
2011 Fairley (DL) 1st 13th, Young (WR) at 44th player , LaShoure (RB) 2nd rd 57th overall
2012 Rieff (OT) 1st rd 23rd, Broyles (WR) 2nd rd 54th, Bentley (CB) 3rd rd 85th
2013 Ansah (DE) 1st rd 5th pick, Slay (CB) 2nd rd 36th, Warford (OG) 3rd rd 65th
2014 Ebron (TE) 1st rd 10th, Van Noy (LB), Swanson (C) 3rd rd 76th pick

Best retired (concussions), Spievey was cut after domestic violence arrest and poor play, Titus Young was cut and is in jail, LaShoure had drug arrest, cut and isn't on an NFL roster. Delmas, Suh and Fairley left and signed with other NFL teams. Broyles had numerous knee issues and requested his release.

3 players gone because of behavior issues and poor play. Best and Broyles retired due to injuries and Bentley was cut this year after numerous injuries. Suh and Delmas are both in Miami as free agents and the Lions opted out of Fairley's option year.

Stafford and Pettigrew are still on the roster from the Lions first 3 picks in '09. All three from 2010 and 2011 are gone. 2 of 3 from 2012 draft are gone. 18 players taken in the Lions first 3 picks including the 3 chosen after Stafford in '09. Only 9 are left on the roster and in that time frame after Stafford Mayhew and Lewand have drafted 2 OLine.

It's Lewand and Mayhew who took Stafford #1 overall in 2009 and signed him to two contracts with $41.7M guaranteed for the first contract and $41.5M guaranteed with the second contract.

I'm not defending Stafford but the Lions OLine wasn't full of players who might be HOF candidates either. Now the Lions have a QB who won't ever have the mobility of Russell Wilson or ability to sidestep pressure like Brady, Rothlisberer and others. He's not in the bottom half of QB's but he has no time after the ball is snapped.

The bigger issue is how Mayhew and Lewand have chosen players in the draft after Stafford and their decision to give Stafford the contract extension. 18 draft choices after their selection of Stafford to be the guy to build around including the '09 draft. Only 2 OLine picks who aren't receivers. 2012's Riley Rieff OT 1st rd and 2014 Swanson C 3rd rd in 2014.

Worst is they have one player remaining on the roster from the first 3 rounds drafted in 2010, 2011 and 2012 drafts. I don't think you can name a successful NFL franchise that's been that inefficient with their picks in the last 6-7 seasons. The constants are Mayhew and Lewand.

Nope. Rex Ryan brought in his own people (Eric Davis is a special teams assistant with the Bills). Schwartz is not even coaching right now. He works for the NFL in some capacity.
