Arson? Natural disaster? Fire training exercise?

No word since the place is still smoldering.
New owners a year or two ago and a few small fires since so this isn't a shocker to me, take from that what you will.

94 year old stick built structure with who knows how many changes in the electrical plans over the years. Places like that end up with so many cobbled repairs that begin as temporary and are later overlooked or forgotten fires like this one are almost inevitable.
Most bars in locations like this don't have the budget for total electrical makeovers. Wouldn't be surprised if the building still had some of the original wiring when it burned. Hope the owners had insurance and enough to live on while the insurance people sift through what's left, make decision on a cause and cut a check.

Many reflect on historic, popular bar that burned to the ground
Sunshine Tweedly and her husband, Ray, took over the bar in the late 1980's and owned it for around 23 years. The last three years she owned it, Sunshine lived on the bar's top floor. She sold it three years ago.
"That's what I wanted Ma Deeter's to do, is to go on forever," Tweedly said. "There's so many memories in this bar. It's just unbelievable. I've been crying since 5 o'clock this morning since friends have called me. It's just so heartbreaking."
It's also heartbreaking for many Luzerne residents who have countless memories there.
"Being able to sit out on that deck, hear the music, just watch traffic go by, have a nice drink, (and) a nice dinner, you couldn't get any better than that in northern Michigan," Dawn Nichol, Luzerne Express manager, said. "It really was an amazing place to be. She will be sadly missed."
"We really need this in our town," Jody Polk, a Luzerne resident who went to the bar for more than 20 years, said. "We're just a small community but we had a name here with Ma Deeter's."

Ma Deeters Prepares To Reopen After Fire
An iconic Northern Michigan bar and restaurant is preparing to reopen.
Ma Deeters in Luzurne in Oscoda County will open its doors Tuesday afternoon.
The original Ma Deeters burned down in October.
The log building stood in Luzurne for nearly 100 years and became a landmark in the area.
Now, almost a year after the fire, the restaurant has been rebuilt and is ready for customers.
Northern Michigan's News Leader will have a crew there, bringing you live reports at 5 and 6.

OSCODA COUNTY, Mi (WPBN/WGTU) -- A decades old restaurant and bar is back from the ashes, Ma Deeters is officially back open for business Tuesday.
A devastating fire last October burned the historic restaurant in Luzerne down to the ground.
Staff with Ma Deeters say they’ve been cleaning face imprints from windows and fielding calls from curious customers all day and are eager to be back to normal.
Ma Deeters has fed people in northern Michigan since 1921 and staff there say it’s important to the community they’re finally back.
"I mean, it's Luzerne, it's Ma Deeters, you have to put something that's been in this community forever back,” said General Manager Brian Smith with Ma Deeters. “It wasn't really a question it was just how fast can we get it started."
Smith says they tried to keep as much the same as possible both inside and out and that includes the staff. All but one staff member have come back to work for Ma Deeters.
