James Strang moved his Mormon offshoot group to the island and basically kicked everyone else out. He got power hungry and declared himself king of the island. People didn't like that all that much. Eventually a few of the Irish settlers that got kicked out came back and capped his ass. The assassins were acquitted basically because the guy was an asshole and the island threw them a party.
