I was first team all state in cross country in high school. PR of 15:50 for the 5k and I also have run half marathons. I could have run at MSU but choose to live the dream instead than run 120 miles every week. I love running but am currently weight lifting more and running less. However, I still take my dog for a run every day and will probably come out of retirement in a couple years. Running is great for the mind!!!

13-16 on weekends, usually 1-2 runs during the week for 3-8 miles. Doing p90x3 also right now. I was never a serious (if that exists) runner until about 4 yrs ago. Now I try to keep up the ability to run a half when I want to.

Working towards my first marathon - 3-5 on weekdays at 10+ on weekends.
I have Brooks Transcend and freaking love these shoes. Amazing comfy.

I am on an Adidas kick lately. Energy boost. Good luck on the marathon. I'm doing number 4 this fall, Detroit. Which one are you doing?

Detroit. I'm utterly dreading it, but I'm in the best shape I've been since HS. That being said, I still got a LONG ways to go; so just keeping at it.

Got an IT Band inflammation today for the first time i my 18 years of running. Could barely walk this morning at work. So that's fun. I think it was because I ran a hilly trail twice this week after running on completely flat ground all winter/spring.

IT pain is no fun. Get healthy.
Rbw - good luck on Detroit. i'll be there as well. Do you have a goal? And don't dread it, relish it. I ran Chicago last fall, great crowd and event, was in great shape and went in with zero expectations. Most enjoyable experience yet with a marathon. Just take it all in. I'm pumped to run over the bridge and back in the tunnel.

Re: Runner's Thread
I've been running for about a year now. Do about 10-12 miles a week.
Need a new pair of shoes, went into a dedicated running store and they said that I was a Severe Overpronator with flat feet. Urged me to get Stability or Motion Control shoes. How important is it that I buy that type of shoe? Pretty limited selection with high prices for those types of shoes.
Is that bunch of hogwash or should I heed there advice?

I'm a terrible pronator. I use the specialty shoes - seems to work for me.

Thanks. Good luck to you and RBW in Detroit. It was my favorite course of the marathons I've done.

Not a runner but I developed runner's knee by going too hard on the exercise bike. Does that count?

I've been lazy with my running the past couple years. It's just not as enjoyable or appealing as it used to be, partially due to an injury and some other setbacks. Perhaps this thread will provide the motivation I seek.

I like getting away from everything or everyone for 30 minutes or two hours. Maybe I'm pissed at work, or MSU losing or whatever. I crave the endorphins and the tranquility of just running.

The times I do run feel great. Energizing, revitalizing, and uplifting. I never get bored when I run. The past few years I was terribly busy, dealing with a nagging knee injury, etc. My enthusiasm waned, and one day I realized I really couldn't call myself a "runner" anymore, since I wasn't putting in enough time.
I did a 5K a couple weeks ago. Just a handful of runs in the few months leading up to it. Obviously didn't set any world records nor did I expect to (still ran okay given the circumstances), but it was a humbling reminder of the fact that if I want to get back to my prime shape I need to work for it.

I don't see the point in it either. I laugh when I see cars with both 13.1 and 26.2. Isn't the 13.1 redundant in that case?!?
However, when I see the vehicles with the "0.0" sticker on the car, I automatically assume the person inside is fat.

My favorite sign running Boston was "I do marathons....on Netflix" held up by this huge lady. I think the 0.0 sticker is funny, but that's only because I think the 26.2 and others are obnoxious.

Does anybody use minimalist shoes?
Vibrams have worked well for me in the past ~4 years. No complaints.

Not sure if they qualify as minimalist or not, but I'm a big fan of Newtons. I am currently running in the Gravity model.
I met the founder of Newton a few years ago and got to go on a run with him. Nice guy and really obsessed with good running form.

Last pair was the Mizuno Wave Alchemy 12. Now I'm rocking the Brooks trascend. Much bigger fan of the brooks.

I agree. Will probably replace these in August with another pair.
Also, for all runners. Had a tough run the other week. Was about half way out on my route when I cramped up with a shooting pain in the abdomen.
Suddenly I got liquid gurgles in my lower abdomen and then internal pressure started pushing on the wall.
I barely made it over to a gas station when I had explosive diarrhea in the dirtiest bathroom I've ever been in.
It sucked!
