Don't know why I can't figure this out. Help me out.
Guy walks into a store and steals 100 dollar bill from the register. He comes back a half hour later and buys 70 dollars worth of goods with the 100 dollar bill and gets 30 bucks back in change.
How much did the owner lose altogether?

How much did the owner lose altogether?
What was the markup on the goods?

In reality the store owner only loses $30 because he managed to, unbeknownst to him, recoup $70 of the lost $100.
From an accounting standpoint, however, the two transactions are unrelated and that $70 purchase was coming regardless of whether or not he was robbed earlier in the day so he's out $100.
Out $100 on the books, out $30 in reality.

He loses $100 when the bill is stolen. (-100)
Then he loses $70 worth of food. (-170)
Then he gains $100 in currency. (-70)
Then he gives away another $30. (-100)
You big dummy.

How much did the owner lose altogether?
$100 + COGS of the $70 in items
The $30 is irrelevant because it's part of the $100 originally stolen.

This goes for the $70 on the goods too.

Yeah, I read that as how much money did the owner lose altogether. $100 in goods and money seems correct.
Hatch and LWS are right, clearly those two are of the same mind.
This board would be wise to seek the council of both LWS and WhiteBoyHatcher.

No it does not. The owner gave those goods away for previously recorded revenue/cash. He stole the money then stole the goods so you should add the COGS at least. It can get a lot more complicated than that if you consider margins etc. but that's not really the purpose of the riddle.

Okay, same question but now three months has passed between the theft and the purchase. How much has the store owner lost?

$100 + COGS + (Opportunity cost = Time value of $100+COGS invested over the 3 month period)
At least that amount.

He lost $100 before the guy came back.
When the guy came back, he traded $70 for goods. Let's assume the COGS was $35. So, he lost $35 on the goods and $30 in cash. $35 + $30 = $65

God damn this pains me.....but Nigel I think is closest so far. His math was the reason for my question on the markup.

Yeah I think this is the correct answer, you have to make some assumption on the COGS to state the owner's actual net loss.

My MSU Accounting degree agrees with this.
If the guy had never come back, actual loss & book loss are both $100 assuming the owner knows he was robbed.
Assuming the owner doesn't know the buyer & the thief are the same person & the thief wasn't going to buy $70 in goods if he hadn't stolen the $100, book loss remains $100, but actual loss is $30 + Cost of Goods Sold.

Then the question is bunk, because without markup there is no way to calculate it.
I still say $100. The theft was for $100. What happened later with a legitimate sale is immaterial.
