Great Lakes water: pipe it to the southwest? NASA scientist says it should be.
I was going to put this in tBin but the Great Lakes represent a lot of sports fishing and boaters here. With the reduction in money by 97% used for clean up and protection of our lakes it seems in 20-30 years this region will be vastly different for those of us who like to fish and ski.

Their argument; the Great Lakes aren't a resource of the region but, rather, the entire country.
My argument; then so is the taxable income of all the hotels, casinos, and golf resorts in the US Southwest.

I'd guess you'll see a lot more conservation measures, wastewater conversion, reservoirs and desalination plants before a pipeline ever got built.

The water isn't getting piped away.
The 97% cut isn't happening.
Fear mongers out in force.

Expect more of this shill from scientists eager for funding.

How bout no. The southwest has been enjoying their artificial desert paradises and warm weather for far too long, pissing away water like nobody's business. Now they want to steal our water to keep the facade going.
They can have some water when they start sending their children to shovel our driveways every winter.

Pipe it? Pffft. Let Nestle bottle it up so they can sell it.

Not sure avocados will be excluded from the border tax. Doubtful.

Didn't realize it until yesterday but Nestle, Absopure and other companies in MI don't have to report how much they bottle and any container that's less than 5.7 gallon can be shipped outside the Great Lakes Baisin.
A pipeline to Texas or Kansas to OK to TX running along the Illinois River and crossing the Mississippi has been proposed in the past. Unlikely but not impossible.

Avocado's are so volatile right now, you wouldn't notice the tax. Floyd, it will get better in Q4, but until then, they'll be expensive. One of the largest crops is currently growing right now, so prices should crash around Sept/Oct and demand has been killed off by current high prices = glut and bad markets.NigelUno wrote:Floyd Robertson wrote:

That's good to know, InTen. Avacado prices aren't usually too bad up here except November - May or something. Otherwise, $1 apiece I guess. Still, damn things are expensive compared to bananas or other kinds of fruit.

The drought has finally taken a toll on CA. The rain they got this winter will help for next year. El Nino hurt the Mexican crop last year, so right now they have about 25% less tahn they did a year ago. Things could get bad around June-August. Peru was supposed to come in and help, but they've had rains so bad they are having infrastructure issues and will be late. There will probably be options other than MX and CA fruit this year.Floyd Robertson wrote:InTenSity wrote:

A solution in search of a problem. If things ever got that bad they'd build a shitload of desalination plants. Of course the treehuggers don't like that either.

The new pipeline for water just for Flint is almost 6 ft diameter. Now figure how many pipes that size it would take to feed California. It's never going to happen

There would have to be changes to some laws and, more importantly, international treaties for this to happen. Our politicians could fuck things up, but no way does Canada ever allow one drop to go to the southwest for any reason. And they'd have to sign off of treaties already in place to allow water pumping to the desert.

Apparently they don’t do a great job of collecting it and there’s a lot of run off into the ocean.

There will be some asshole politicians willing to trade Great Lakes water for political donations.
I see Great Lakes as MI's ace in the hole. Let folks move to Texas and Arizona and let them experience life totally dependent on those state's fresh water resources. I hope the dumb MF'er succeed in seceding and let them go it alone.
But given NASA is in Texas its not surprising people who work there would want potable Great Lakes water.

Not sure under what circumstances that would change. I guess the US might overrule the States but since Canada is involved what they would want to allow it is the question.

I was just about to post "I love how the author of that USA Today piece prioritizes the reasons why not draining the Great Lakes as (1) logistical and (2) legal." and figure I should go back and re-read the previous posts. Good job. Travis.

For the US it seems that people have just moved where there isn't water, but globally water is expected to become an issue.
