Vote on the roundabout
Do you want a roundabout?
For years, residents of Beaver Hills have been complaining about speeds at Crescent and Munson Streets. Now officials have put together a plan for a traffic-calming roundabout — if the city can find the money to pay for it.

Maybe 5% of Americans know how to drive them. Auto insurance fender-bender nightmare

Anyone who has ever tried to turn onto Green Street or Adeline Street at the intersection where the two streets meet with Second Avenue and Hardy Street knows how difficult it is to maneuver.

I have learned over the past year that Yoopers love roundabouts. There's at least 2 in Ishpeming, and they just put 2 new ones in Marquette this fall to go along with the ones they already have.

Roundabouts are great in certain places, but the one at 18.5 and Van Dyke is a giant cluster with about 80,000 vehicles going through there a day. Rush hour is a nightmare.

When I was a child these were called "traffic circles." When did the English "roundabout" become prevalent?

They have always had all kinds of names. Rotunda, road circle, traffic circle, island...Space Lord wrote:When I was a child these were called "traffic circles." When did the English "roundabout" become prevalent?
Guys that complain about traffic jams don't understand how much worse they'd be if it was a Michigan left, or a regular four way stop. Study after study says these things keep traffic flowing. Traffic is not required to stop, only yield and they can handle more flow over the rush hour.
Some "Rotaries" are bigger and can handle higher rates of speed. I'm not kidding you, if we could afford in America to change more of the traditional traffic lights at big intersections on roads like 16 and mound, or down the mile roads it would keep traffic flowing.
How many of you have ever been on 16 going west to east and are screaming because the lights aren't timed? Stop, get up to speed, stop, get up to speed, stop.

I got to drive one of those new ones in Marquette. It made a good day great.

I don't remember the specifics, but I think there differences between the two.

Larger, smaller and speed. Some are used to keep traffic flowing, some are used to slow down or "calm" traffic in a neighborhood.

If you get lonely for one use Exit 151 off I75 and get fuel at the Flying J - the State has those sonsabitches on that road.
Just for you.....A picture of this blot on our landscape....

Very, very few drivers actually understand what yield means, let alone how to do it.
I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

I love them. I think they are just the greatest. I do not love drivers who think a yield sign going into them is a stop sign. Those people are not the greatest

but for some real excitement try the Divering Diamond exit (Cascade & 96 in GR)
that's the one where cross over and drive on the left side of the road over the highway and then cross back
but don't look to google maps yet, because they have the old interchange

From almost getting nailed twice in the last couple of weeks I don't think people know what a stop sign or red light means either.

Thats the beauty of traffic circles jake. I think it’s the whole point actually.... other drivers are shitty but a traffic circle accident is gonna be some dings on your car and that’s it. You won’t be dead.Jake from State Farm wrote:I.B. Fine wrote:

I've got no problem whatsoever with roundabouts. I hate waiting at effing red lights. I drive Old 27 to work in the morning. Whoever timed the lights on that highway needs to go back to grade school.

Ever hear the statistic about how people rate themselves as drivers? Like 90+% think they're above average.
No one understands statistics either.

If I put my mind to it I'm actually a pretty good driver, it's when I start texting and eating and watching a video at the same time as when I'm driving is when it all goes to hell.

That looks pretty great, like modern art. Do you hate them because you're a confused old man who drives with his blinker on? Or because you enjoy being stopped at red lights?

You're actually not horrible then, either, but when you start putting on your makeup and pantyhose, that's when you become a menace.

Greenway that should be every exit in the state that doesn’t have an insane amount of traffic and even then, maybe.tGreenWay wrote:LooseGoose wrote:

I think we need a tSwill driving rodeo to prove our feats of driving skill through a couple roundabouts while eating a burrito and texting/replying to OTPT's nonsense at the same time.

Price Road at 127 would be a good candidate. There's a long curve leading up towards the ramp from the east. For some reason people can't judge how far away and how fast a car is moving when the other car is on a curve. I get people that pull out in front of me all the time there. Now I just expect it when I travel that area, which is just about daily.

Yeah, that thing is a mess in the late afternoon. Noticed a lot of drivers I think try to avoid it by taking 19 Mile. The left turn onto NB Van Dyke sometimes backs up 19 Mile all the way to the railroad tracks.Floyd Robertson wrote:Roundabouts are great in certain places, but the one at 18.5 and Van Dyke is a giant cluster with about 80,000 vehicles going through there a day. That 19 mile backup existed long before the roundabout, going back to the late 80s when I lived at 19 & Schoenherr.

Come to think of it, you're right. Took VD to 19 on the way home when picking up carryout from Ping On. Backup was there and the roundabout was not.Floyd Robertson wrote:The Pantry wrote:Yeah, that thing is a mess in the late afternoon.
