1988 Rose Bowl
Saturday ,10pm NBCSN. 3 hour broadcast should be mostly in it's entirety. Not sure I've ever watched it all

It was a very tense game to be watching it live, despite the dulcet tones of Merlin Olsen.

It's on YouTube in its entirety if the suspense is too much to wait. Though NBCSN might upconvert the quality a little.
I had a Telecom class at State where we watched the pre-game from about the National Anthem through maybe the first quarter or so, to analyze and discuss the storytelling aspect from a production standpoint (what they show and focus on, camera angles, etc.). Mushin Muhammed would often sit next to/near me. Small classroom, not a lecture hall. Seemed a good guy, intelligent, always engaged in class. I've never met someone with such disproportionately large hands. Born to be a WR.

Re: 1988 Rose Bowl
My memory sucks, but I do remember working in the morning. It must of been bagging groceries at the Kroger. Double time holiday pay. Probably spent most of the shift hiding out in the bottle return room. Got home early afternoon and watchedd the game with my old man (Spartan grad). Weird thing is my memory (see opening statement) is of a bright sunny day that afternoon (in the D). Just looked it up and apparently is was cloudy and cold. Must of been the win that brightened it up.

It's weird how frustrating that is to me when I've been rewatching old sporting events during this lockdown.

We probably didn't think twice about it back then. Watching old hoops is worse than football.

Vern called TD while the ball was in the air. They want USC to win. FUCK!

So pumped for the big win. The future is bright. With the football program, athletic department, and administration all back on the same page. This harmony among those groups will lead to great things and more Rose Bowls in the years to come!

Re: 1988 Rose Bowl
This got me wondering about the regular season matchup with USC. Found this. Magic Johnson was there and holy fucking halftime show. A howitzer, fireworks, and Lee fucking Greenwood? God damn!

This is entire halftime show that aired. It was such a great day and great night to be on campus. Going to work the next day after getting home at 2am was a bitch though, even at the age of 27 lol.

In reality, I don't remember most of this. I was in high school. Am I getting the Alzheimer's?

Re: 1988 Rose Bowl
story time, kids:
I grew up in western North Carolina. My high school girlfriend's Mom and Dad both went to Michigan State, met here in East Lansing. I was a senior in HS in January of '88 and I remember her Mom running around their house singing the MSU fight song while we watched the Rose Bowl that year. I was just a country boy from the mountains - I probably couldn't have have pointed out Michigan on a map.
Fast forward to now: we've lived in East Lansing for 25 years this summer. I went to grad school here and my daughter is a proud Spartan - while I have no idea what the HS girlfriend is up to these days, I suspect her parents would think that's pretty cool.

Re: 1988 Rose Bowl
The Labor Day game in 1987 against USC was the first night game ever at Spartan Stadium. It was a big deal at the time. The game also led to my favorite piece of MSU memorabilia:
Certainly not the most valuable piece I own, but probably my favorite. I did like the price (free) I took it from the library after the game.

As I remember it, Cybill Shepherd sand the national anthem before the game. In the height or her "Moonlighting" fame (a popular TV series starring her and Bruce Willis).Floyd Robertson wrote:This is entire halftime show that aired. DiBiaggio looks like he should have been in a Scorcese movie.
