My niece and her husband are very upset because Gov Whitmer had the audacity to shut down high schools and as (or maybe more) importantly their high school had won its football game Friday and were going to play this weekend.

We're talking HS football folks. In some people's mind its more important than slowing COVID and giving hospitals a shot at keeping adequate staffing.

Lockdowns are now so politicized that they will be counterproductive. Need to stick with mask mandates, targeted closures (like socially distanced dining and gatherings), warnings about hospital issues, and assurances that this is almost over.

I wish people would abide by a lockdown, but I think it will just lead to another storming of the capital which I can’t believe is a thing that happened and not me just being dramatic.

The politicization of public health policy is one of the most frustrating and disappointing aspects of our current political climate. But this is the result of years of the right building a distrust in government, media, academia and science. Of course this is the result of that campaign. And politics in Michigan are polarized in normal times. Pandemics don't exactly make dysfunction better.

I continue to believe there is a need for the Michigan legislature to be part-time to avoid the professionalization of politics at the state level. I continue to give Governor Whitmer credit for her focus on science and best-practices determined by following the current understanding from epidemiology and virology. I also thinks she truly doesn't care about criticism from the right and the likes of Senator Shirkey and Representative Chatfield. A pandemic requires strong and assertive leadership. Too many on the right want to give equal credence to any viewpoint, no matter how ill-informed. That shouldn't be how public health policy is determined.
