Any turf management specialists here?
Got a call from Scott's lawn service yesterday giving me the hard sell to schedule a grub killer application (cost about 3X a regular fertilizer application). Said grubs are going to be big problem in Michigan this summer and went into some rant about Japanese beetles killing trees within days, at which point I told him I was busy and to call me back next week.
My lawn and other lawns in my sub all look great...no brown patches anywhere. And on top of that, I haven't noticed any mole tunnels like in previous years.
Are grubs a potential problem this summer or was the dude just trying to blow smoke up my ass?

The guy who has such a boner for all the "goodness" for raw milk with cow shit in it is seriously asking about waging chemical warfare on all the living insects on his lawn (even the good ones)

Scott's will wait for you to say "no" before scattering a bucket o'grubs all over your lawn. Then they'll hit you up in late fall or in the spring with the ol' "told ya so."

I only apply grub killer when I notice a problem, typically when doing landscaping. Because of the cost and the fact I prefer to use as little pesticide as possible I only treat areas where there is a problem. I used the Bayer 24 hour grub killer in May, and will use the season long grub killer next week. That should knock down the grub population pretty good and hopefully I won't have to treat again for a few years.

MSU is an awesome source for this stuff. 5 grubs per square foot would have seemed like a lot but that makes sense. When I removed sod I would see grubs here and there but I have never had a problem and never treated for them in 15 years .
I have a delicate ecosystem where moles eat the grubs and my cat ears the moles

this is the time in michigan to treat with imidacolprid. one application will prevent 98% of grubs for the year, it's a fantastic product. however, it has been shown in early studies to be bad for bee populations, so don't use it on flowering plants that attract honeybees, to be safe until they know for sure what's going on. used properly, it's the best way to eliminate grub issues. i can't recommend it enough.
if japanese beetles have a big year, the adults will chomp on a lot of landscape plants, it's a long list of favorites. it all depends on how many adults there are flying around in the next month. in my area, we are looking at a down year, but it can be very spotty. if you are looking at a large population, then you can treat at that time with a contact insecticide or powder.

Re: Any turf management specialists here?
3x a lawn app is outrageous. Some companies will do it for the same price as a lawn app.
Here's the thing. Only an active grub killer would be that much more expensive than a regular app. You wont know you have a grub problem until you do an extensive search for grubs, or you notice brown grass that will pull up like carpet. So you are either getting raped on price for a grub prevention product (which is pennies per square foot) or they are putting down a harsh chemical without the need. Either way its bad business.

You need to stop burning the grass. It's not healthy.
