Do you like to bowl, swill?

I don't know, think I'm getting into it. How midwest is that? Is bowling midwest?

I enjoy bowling, but I'm not very good at it. I've broken 200 once or twice, but usually 140 would be a good score for me. I would probably be better if I bowled more often, but I don't have much interest in joining a league.

Bowling is big downriver too. So basically, it's working class fun.

I was in a league for a few years when I worked for a company in Taylor. I really enjoyed it despite only carrying about a 185 average. I haven't bowled regularly in about 30 years but have been thinking about getting back into it.

I used to bowl a couple leagues and our team bowled the State Tournament, the Hoinke Classic and the Shammy Burt every year for 10-15 years. Dropped the leagues when I moved north but am thinking about starting again next fall. My sons still bowl leagues but it is kind of old school. If you have a group of friends it's a great social get together with some competition.

When I started I was a high 130s/low 140s bowler by the time I "retired" I generally averaged mid to upper 170s which is a fun area to be in. Good enough not to suck but still lots of room to throw the occasional game way over your average.

My biggest piece of advice would be to get your own equipment and don't skimp. Rental shoes and house balls suck. I bought a pair of Lind's Classic shoes in 1988 and my son is still using them. $140 back then but well worth it, I think they're slightly less now. You can get a decent quality ball drilled locally for $80-$120 and again worth it since it's fitted to your hand.

Goose is right about getting your own equipment, if you think you're going to stick with it. It makes a huge difference.

Only 185 ?  That's a great average!  I bowled on leagues for 25 years and never averaged more than 165.

Hammers were good balls. I was digging around Amazon the other day actually and see they're still making Rhinos too. I was thinking about starting out with one of those and go from there. Only $75 now, they used to be in the mid $100s.

My elementary school had a bowling league on Fridays after school. Never super serious, but I did have my own ball. That was cool...except for having to walk a half mile to school lugging that damn thing. It was better in the winter if the road or sidewalk was slick and I could just slide the bag along with my feet.

I've probably only bowled like 10 times since elementary though. I will usually bowl my first game in the 120s or so, and then the other games tail off as my arm gets tired.

My cousins are crazy good. Like 220ish avg. Spend ridiculous $$ on balls. Always in high roller tournaments in Cincinnati area. Dudes are nuts about it.

I stopped bowling after my knee surgery. I had a 185 average, 16# fingertip ball.

I'm sure I can bowl again, but I gave my ball to my best friend. It had some cracks forming, so I'm sure it'll split in half eventually.

Notice, I didn't say people that were heavy. I said people that "weren't fit". Yes there are heavier athletes that are considered "obese" by BMI measure, but they are still fit. OL and DL men in the NFL. Some pitchers. Yes sumos and other combat sport participates that have excess body fat are still fit (IE they can handle sustained elevated heart rate for periods of time).
