On July 2 , 2014, Louie Zamperini died at 97. His remarkable life was the subject of Laura Hillenbrand's book Unbroken that will be released as a movie this year.

Zamperini was the son of Italian immigrants who settled in Torrance CA who became one of the nation's best HS milers, won a scholarship to USC and was a member of the 1936 Olympic team. He became a B-24 bombadier in WW2. His plane went down in the Pacific in 1943. He and some of the crew made it to an island only to be captured by the Japanese. His parents received word his was KIA but he survived and was liberated from the POW camp in 1945.

The punishment that guy went through as a POW still has me hating the Japanese. The guy was an American hero and true bad ass. RIP to one of our most stories protectors of freedom.
