Chest freezer
Hey guys, internet friends, internet enemies, cowards, glory posters, etc,
I got a chest freezer over the summer which was a really great idea and I put it in the garage for safe keeping of meat that I found on sale.
Anyway it just occurred to me that eventually in Michigan it’s probably going to get cold. The garage is cold but not as cold as outside. Ya know, it’s a garage. Is that freezer going to explode or something? Is there anything I need to do to make sure it keeps my meat on ice?

Your chest freezer will continue to work on your frozen meat in your frozen garage.

It’ll be okay after you line it with bottom dollars.

That last one happened because they used fake bottom dollars. You need the real thing.

So... I got a stand up one in the garage. Did notice the MFR running in the middle of the winter, with the air temp far lower than freezing. What Da Fuq with that?

Buy a heater for the garage so the freezer won't know the difference.

Yeah I guess that’s kinda what I’m concerned about. I don’t think the freezer is like “oh it’s cold out, so I can just let air in” it probably just needs to work harder since it’s fucking cold and the machine parts are sad or something.

Re: Chest freezer
The freezer works off a thermostat inside that wants to keep the interior cold, usually about zero degrees. If the garage is cold, but not zero it will still run.
Refrigerator/freezer combos, on the other hand, will stop running because the refrigerator is cold enough, allowing the stuff in the freezer to melt.

Use to have an old harvest gold Montgomery Ward side-by-side in the garage. Few years ago noticed neither the freezer or fridge were doing their jobs very well regardless of how the individual temp controls were set. Also noticed the front edge of the dividing wall was hot to the touch.
DTE was offering $40 to haul away old working fridge/freezers so took them up on it and bought a new, full-size, cheap fridge/freezer for the garage. The new unit came with a sticker on it saying it would cost approximately $51 a year in electricity.
Was sort of astounded getting my DTE bill the following month. It dropped $30 from what it had been before. The new unit pretty much paid for itself in energy savings the first year.

I have owned a stand-up freezer in my garage for probably a decade. It hasn't been an issue.

Ballers buy Chillerators. They work in extremely high and low temps.
I'd nver buy one, because 1. I'm not rich. 2. It's extra to walk to the garage.

Travis, maybe stop eating murder and you would not have to own so many freezers.

Tell your girlfriend she’s fat. Your meat will be on ice for weeks. Maybe all winter.

Re: Chest freezer
Test it out before you fill it with meat. My son lost a freezer full of meat from a brand new freezer that didn't work. They brought him a replacement freezer, that one was garbage too.

I have one in my garage and it ran this past winter with no problems at all.
Of course I don't have severed heads and body parts in mine, so I see the concerns about doing more research.
