My dishwasher’s utensil holder came with individual slots. The correct answer is the path of least resistance, therefore, spoons and forks go working end up, with knives going business end up. Anything else is creating unnecessary work for myself.

I swear the product managers in charge of those took a vacation and let the designers take over. Those are the worst utensil baskets. Utensils should always go in handle up.

Down, because when you go to empty it you don't want to be grabbing the part of the fork that's going to be in your mouth or the sharp end of a knife. What's the reasoning for putting them up?

All of this plus you won't get stabbed emptying the dishwasher.

Knives go down in mine, spoons and forks up. That's just the way the rack works. Of course my granddaughter lays them on it sideways. Or it could be the wife who does that. I don't know, she complains when I rearrange the dishes in the dishwasher to fit more in and make sure the bowls aren't laying on top of each other.

I’ve actually had tense “debates” with my wife on dishwasher loading. Nothing pisses me off more than lazy loading.

I just wait until she's out of the room. I've been through those "debates" too.

no, I'm actually the opposite. My extreme anti-clutter stance drives my wife insane.kingstonlake wrote:Robert J Sakimano wrote:We have a dishwasher but it's never been used.

Whenever Mrs. GreenWay loads the dishwasher, it must activate my latent OCD tendencies. Add to that my German engineering, and I usually wind up reloading the whole dishwasher. Thankfully, it’s never a tense moment. I can laugh about myself needing to rearrange everything to my specs.

I can load a dishwasher and pack a car. Two skills I learned from my old man.

You don't want to be grabbing the part that's going to be in your mouth... So you don't eat fruit or anything with your hands ever? How did humans survive before utensils?
And stab yourself? Do you just blindly reach in with a club hand?

Lol yes I eat fruit with my hands. But when it comes to grabbing silverware I guess I just prefer to grab the end that is meant to be held with your hand. Do you fill it with the fork side up? How come?

You can always wash your hands before putting the dishes and utensils away. On the other hand, how do you grab a clean bowl out of the dishwasher without putting your fingers on the outside and your thumb on the inside? Same with plates. Oh eff, just buy Styrofoam and plastic and hope it's sanitized at the factory.

Spoons: Easier to keep from nesting together to ensure total washability
Forks: Not stabby to the plastic holder or falling through holes and poking out the other side
Knives: Not stabby to the plastic holder
My dad was big into "not ruining" the dishwasher and I never really cared (still don't just habit now) till I got older and helped at friends houses or lived in college apartments and you couldn't put certain things places because there were holes in the utensil holder #ruined. Still not a hill I'd die on, but it does all fit more uniform and cleanly with every piece having the same rounded base to rest on
