Fair point. I'm celebrating the decline straight across the board as a good thing. I think part of the drop is due to Joe being a boring president and sanity being somewhat restored.

Q2 2020 saw the pandemic blow up, everyone in lockdown, the biggest civil rights protests since the 60s. All three cable news networks saw their biggest quarterly ratings in their history in Q2 2020.

However, a more realistic comparison without those unprecedented events, would be to compare Q2 2021 to Q2 2019. In that comparison, during primetime, CNN is up 20% over 2019, while MSNBC is down 13% and Fox is down 9%. Still, despite gaining 30% on it's competitors, CNN is still in 3rd place.

The decline over 2019 for MSNBC and Fox is largely due to the decline of linear TV viewing overall, so that has little to do with Trump or Biden. CNN being up over 2019 is because they had far and away the largest gains from 2019 to 2020 (Up 138%, versus MSNBC up 20% and Fox up 50% in Q2 2020 over Q2 2019), so despite the steepest decline in 2020, they netted out ahead of 2 years ago.

There has to be a Joe Biden effect. I buy into the arguments of this year vs last year with the protest/pandemic/election year however.

Obviously, a Biden presidency is boring (and I mean that as a compliment, believe me). But the numbers don't support that as hurting news ratings compared to "normal" times. Sure, they're down, but so is all TV viewership. Of course, this is just top line numbers, and I'm sure the networks and some reporters will drill down into it further.

Trump generated ratings somewhat, but I think in 2018 and 2019 people were pretty bored with his nonsense and wouldn't tune in. That likely changed in Q3/Q4 2019 with the impeachment.
