Same as assassinated and shot. Dignitaries are assassinated and imprisoned. Regular people are shot and jailed.

Here in MI, a sentence over one year usually is served in a prison, anything under is most often served in a local jail. Based on that, as it relates to Russia, my guess is imprisoned would follow a trial, however loose Putin uses that word. Jailed might mean being held before one of those “trials” or being held for alleged wrongdoing but without an expected trial, including Putin’s political enemies.
