Okay, yeah I do. My Swill reputation is just 51. I'm embarrassed. What do I have to do, be honest and respectful? Post something interesting? Come on guys, help me out here.

Those upvotes don't mean a thing AFAIK. OTOH, the + and - to the far right of each post make a great deal of difference. You just went from 1 to 2.

However, I don't have "the + and - to the far right of each post", though now that you mention it, I do see a little bar with green and red over there, which shows up if some else has posted after me.

My first guess is that is a "Geronte thing"

In just two months I've gone from 51 to 53.  That's an average increase of over six tenths of a point every nineteen days!

Read through the charter and the FQA, not covered in either one.

If you're on mobile you won't see the + and - rating option, I know that for sure. You have to use the desktop version. As far as who gets them, IDK.

I have my own rule to never log to this board from my mobile devices, so only see what is completely public on there. This is all from a computer, and I assume is the desktop version (how would I know?).

The reputation bar for the message, at the top far right, just started showing up for me during this discussion, and isn't there all the time or for all posts, so sit working out how that works. Also seeing a few, but not many, reputation bars for other posters. All still confusing ....

The trait of many engineers, and I have it, is the burning desire to know how everything works in detail.

What my reputation is can for me only be parsed to when someone votes on it, and then, based on what I posted in the voted-on post I could know what people don't like, however, only if I understand the system and can find the voted-on posts. You chose a different route, which I respect. Sorry that this explanation may be much more than you want.

Now I can see what doesn't show up for me, not being a member of the cool posters club not, for some unknown reason, having those buttons.

Just as well, I probably would be giving everyone plus reputation points for all their posts, being the nice poster that I am, and Cameron would have to counteract me.
