Take 32 West out to Elmira and stop in the Elmira Inn or whatever it’s called these days. It’s you’re kind of place, OTPT.

Home of the potato burger. It tastes exactly like it sounds.

It's probably gone now, but back in the day you could get drunk and then go across the street to an ag equipment dealer and buy a new potato harvester.

Need help with my memories. Was the Sugar Bowl on the north side of 32, just a little east of 75? If so, had breakfast there a few times on the way to the UP as a kid. Parents use to stop at a place in West Branch for breakfast, but if we left really early in the morning Dad would drive to Gaylord before stopping to eat.Trapper Gus wrote:kingstonlake wrote:Sorry otpt. What was once downtown Gaylord, northeast of the County Building, had two dinning rooms, casual and formal. Think the Gaylord poohbas would meet and greet upstairs.

Recall when I-75 wasn't completed. Had to get off on US-10 and go through Clare's "Gateway to the North". As 75 construction got farther along we'd take it up to Standish, then take two-laners to get to the northern I-75...forget now where that was. Roscommon? Grayling?kingstonlake wrote:The Pantry wrote:Need help with my memories. Was the Sugar Bowl on the north side of 32, just a little east of 75? "Big Tornado" sounds like a band that would be playing at a casino.

Depends on time frame.
At Stanish took US 23 to the road that goes through Sterling, following the NYCRR tracks up to West Branch, then M55 to St. Helan and up to connect to I75 below Grayling. As I remember it. Before the Bay City to Standish bit was done US23 was what M13 is now.

I do also, and remember after the high level bridge was built river shipping traffic dropped so much it was hardly needed.
Re: Big Tornado in Gaylord
Me too. 75 traffic would backup for miles. One time was so bad Dad got off 75 and got the family a room for the night. Think that's the only time I stayed at a Holiday Inn before they changed to HI Express.kingstonlake wrote:I can remember when the Zil was a draw bridge.

Remember the construction accident building the bridge? They lost control of one of the massive concrete sections. No one injured IIRC but bet a number of construction workers shit their pants when it happened. It didn't fall but ended up sitting cattywampus for months before they engineered a way to straighten it out.
