Just wondering if we have statistics that say once you legalize a drug, if that drug goes up in usage

If you all want to end the war on drugs this is how it is done.

I’m sure it’s gone up, but using the word drug to conflate weed and fentanyl seems incorrect. They’re entirely different animals. It’d be like comparing Wilt Chamberlain’s sex life with greenway’s. Like yeah, I guess in a way they’re sort of in the same universe, but no not really.

I've smoked as much as I want for years now, but it's getting cheaper to do post legalization.

that is sort of the point. When people can walk into a business & buy what they want at with a legitimate market setting prices then fewer people steal to support their habits.

Here is something for you, DWags.

You can find more usage data by looking at the DHHS's National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Oddly enough, the legalization trend has not put a dent in the black-market sales of marijuana. Regulations, taxes, and increased demand make buying from a licensed dispensary far more expensive.

Or has the illegal market, now that it has competition, adjusting its pricing?
As all the States legalize and the market become more mature will black market sales become like unlicensed cigarette sales?

For me personally, I definitely noticed higher prices when I first started buying from dispensaries. Competition in my area has now brought legal weed well below the price I used to pay on the black market. I recognize that that is entirely anecdotal, though, so perhaps I'm just lucky.

Not sure if use has increased, but I believe it has become safer to produce, procure, and consume and that all leads to a net positive in my view.
Also, there is a false equivalency between marijuana use and the narcotics that BC is decriminalizing. Those are inherently riskier to use than marijuana.

Life is risky, bro. At any moment the Washtenaw County prosecutor can get a warrant for your arrest for being mean to UM. That’s just one of the several million risks you take every day that could upend your life.

Sort of like the difference between drinking 3.2 beer and white lightening.

Re: Do we know if weed smoking has gone up in our country since it’s been legalized in various states?
I think we have both overplayed our hands, so to speak.
I want to shift the conversation to the horrible people from the state of Michigan. NY could only give out retail licenses to a handful of dispensaries, all in and around NYC. Why? Because some greedy person in Michigan does not like how NY regulates licensing, they filed suit against the state in federal court. There is concern this lawsuit could inadvertently trigger a review of state legalization in federal courts, so this person might screw this up for everyone who enjoys legalized consumption.

Good Job Turtleneck,
Reading through all of these shows a definite set of "growing pains" ongoing as weed become legal in some places and not legal in others, along with the people who were making bucks in the industry before any legal weed reacting and trying to follow their existing market strategies.
Most of the story is about the growers, not the sellers. The deal there is like any commodity farming. Once large-scale legal production comes online it will be tougher for other types of production to compete, but the wholesale markets are not there, yet.
It's more likely that the retail prices will not reflect the sources, as at the moment the retail markets in many places are a seller's market, so if the retailers can get weed cheaper from illegal sources some of them will be doing that. Of course, there will often be your friend who is growing a few plants for their own use selling some to you, just like your friend who brews their own beer.

IMO, though in one of your links, to a PBS interview, people disagree with this, the lack of national legalization is making this market very, as the economists say, distorted.
There is a hemp farm a couple of miles north of where I live, and while is does seem to require much more hand labor than corn, that may be because of its growth cycle meaning much of the labor has not been mechanized. Once one farmer can plant 80 acres of weed using a tractor and the right attachments the price will drop bigly.

Don’t know about smoking but people in my family who used to trash me as a pothead now are regular edible users. I ain’t mad.
