I was worried for a second. We're probably going to see more guys leave that are down the depth chart (with a new coaching staff). Good Luck to him. Opens up a spot I guess.

This is the new normal for all teams.

Guys on the depth chart who can see they are not making it to the 2 deeps, and some that are not number one, will be leaving teams for greener fields, where they can gain playing time & exposure.

I don't know if he even played in the scrimmage, but the true FR RB did (and looked good).  At best Primm was RB5 (and seems like we're still looking at a few portal RBs).

Hope he graduated, and can pick a place to hang around for 2 years and (maybe) get a Master's Degree.

Need to start doing contingency deals (if you get paid at any point in a year, you have to finish the season or give money back).

Maybe he's looking for a boost, or didn't really mesh with the new staff. He was a good player on a bad team.

Moving on.

Mildly optimistic. There were also a few strange throws, and a couple of odd goal line play calls. Plenty to work on.

Unless Smith et al get hugely lucky in the portal a season at 500 will be the best I can expect.

If they can make a bowl game (6-7 wins), then I will be happy. And I really don't think that that is too much of a stretch - last year's team was worse at key positions, and we weren't too far off of making a bowl game if they could have hung on and beat the teams they statistically should have beaten. I'm thinking this season will look a lot like 2007 - we'll be competitive in most games, and we might even hang on to surprise a team we have no business beating, but 6-7 wins is probably the sweet spot this season.

I have no idea, but I'm guessing it works that way right now (with some guys). I think "we" had to pay Coleman to stick around for spring ball last year, and then he wanted more money.

So, it's not like we didn't realize there was a chance Harmon could still leave. Not my money, so whatever.

Losing both Barrow and Harmon hurts badly from a talent standpoint. Def need at least one more portal guy and hopefully two to replace them + a healthy Van Summerin and Hansen.

All of the above said, I still feel like they both underachieved for most of their careers at MSU.

Could it be that the new defense doesn't fit their talents as much as the old one?

"Gates To The Portal" sounds like a reflective podcast outlining the pathways, both traditional and non-traditional, explored by young student-athletes as they search for a comfortable fit in both academics and athletics, on the field and off.

on this weeks installment of "Gates To The Portal", Jackmerius and his parents meet with the chair of the economics department as they discuss potential career paths at a prospective university; William is astounded to find out that his parents won't be guaranteed 4 box seats at each home game; Jalen gets a dose of reality when he finds out his girlfriend isn't interested in transferring with him, as she has found a new love interest.

I’m here to say that I’m the biggest hypocrite in the world.

Want college kids to get paid

Feel they should have as much freedom of movement as is allowed a coach who has been recruiting them.

Feel they are not just students but employees

Hate the portal and think it will implode college football

And have no idea how to fix it.

Go Green though. I’ll be watching every play next Fall. It’s my crack addiction.

Need contracts for a certain amount of time.  Like imagine the chaos if every pro athlete could move every year.

It doesn't have to be a 4 year contract, but it is up to the school and the student.

If a kid wants to transfer before his contract is up, he has to sit out a year like the old rules.

A single period of "free agency", whenever and for however long it may be.  None of this portaling during the season, then after the regular season, then after spring practice.

Kids are guaranteed their NIL for the length of the contract as long as they don't leave school completely.

I don't know, I haven't really given this more than a couple of minutes of thought. Just applying pro sports aspects if we want to pay them like pros, and avoid this chaos.

4 added so far.

16 are still in the portal.

Biggest position hit seems to be the d-line.

Does switching from a 4 - 2 - 5 to a 4 - 3 - 4 have anything to do with it? Or is it the coaches / players just not getting along?

Smith is considered more of an offense orientated style, Tucker was a defensive style, but the defense hasn't been effective for a while.

How does that play into this?

Having a new coach overshadows any portal loss(es) for me.

I think we'll add some more guys.

And I forgot...didn't the extra Covid year allow for more (than 85) scholarships for awhile. Maybe that ends this year, and we need guys to leave. I could be wrong.
