The UP has some of the deepest mines in the world. all of which are no longer working.

Other parts of the world are looking to turn their abandoned mines into gravity batteries.

This would be a twofer for the UP, since it also has issues with generating electricity at the moment.

One of the deepest metal mines in Europe – the Pyhäsalmi Mine in central Finland – is to be turned into an enormous gravity battery capable of storing 2 megawatts of energy.
