Maybe schools/teams should start giving Hoke gifts?

Yes, Joe Nathan bobblehead night would be a much better draw.

And then it's on to Mark Teixeira? WOOHOO!
I'm going to guess that Ichiro has more class than this and just retires. It's sad.

I am surprised the White Sox organization gave him something other than a beating.

I thought it was cool when guys like Jud and Keady retired, and they would be given wacky gifts on their farewell tours.
Don't much care for it at the professional level.

Rivera is the best closer ever, and Jeter is in the top 10 hits of all time. It's not like players like these come around very often.
It's also worth noting that both of them are home grown talent for the Yankees and 5 time World Champs. Simply spending an entire career on one team is notable these days. To put up the numbers they did, for as long as each of them did is something that very few players have ever done, in any era.

I think they both would've really appreciated an accordion.. word on the street is that both are heavily involved in an underground attempt at a polka revival.

Teams are doing it because they think it increases attendance to that particular game.

You don't have to announce that you're going to retire at the end of the year before the year starts.

- if you want a surfboard, an accordion, a lawn rake and a pneumatic hammer presented to you, it helps to announce it ahead of time.Rocinante wrote:

Actually I think very few players careers end with planned retirements. They usually end due to injury and/or diminished skills to the point no team wants them around anymore. If someone like Trammel or Kaline knew this was going to be their last year, I don't think of it as egotistical to let the fans know about it. They aren't announcing it for the purpose of hauling in a few toys.

I actually agree with you. I think it's probably strongly encouraged by the club. Neither Rivera nor Jeter seem like they were having a particularly great time with it. Especially since Jeter is a shell of his former self. But regardless of the motivation, it sucks. Show some class and leave quietly. Fuckin first ballot HOFer, you're not lacking in knob bobbing from fans or the media.
