That seems awfully low?
It's really quite amazing what a recovery we're having from the awful worldwide recession and the failed Bush economy.

Thank goodness for low unemployment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Meanwhile, in realityville.....
For most workers, real wages have barely budged for decades

The median wealth for whites in the US is nearly $142,000. For blacks, it's $11,000.

Re: How's Obama doing with unemployment?
Pretty horrendous, actually. Depending on who you talk to, the real unemployment rate is 9.5% to 11%. We have record levels of adults living with their parents unable to find jobs. The median household incomes for American has gone down a staggering $3500 since Obama won his re-election.
But hey, those cooked government numbers are sweet! All those part time waitressing jobs are really helping people out, lol.
"The Economic Policy Institute, a Left-leaning think tank supported by labor unions, has factored out the retirees and other demographic exits from the labor force and still comes up with more than 6.3 million “missing workers” not counted in the official unemployment statistics. EPI says honestly counting them as unemployed zips the real September unemployment rate up to 9.6 percent.
"Where did they go?" asks Braun.
The Brookings Institution tabulates more than 5 million “disconnected youth,” Americans between the ages of 16 and 24 who don’t go to school, don’t have a job and don’t have any education higher than a high school diploma. And “Unfit for Work,” a recent National Public Radio report, showed the rate of Social Security disability claims jumped up both suspiciously and dramatically after the 2008 recession.
They called the generation of young people who fought in World War I "The Lost Generation" - a phrase coined by Ernest Hemingway to describe the aimlessness of young people traumatized by the war. With the rate of young people still living at home with their parents hitting record levels, and opportunities for decent paying jobs scarce, an unhealthy slice of the youth population appears to have simply given up on their lives."

Re: How's Obama doing with unemployment?
The ironic part is, the younger millennials who fell for 'hope and change' are living with their parents and dependent upon their parents for their finances at record levels. You literally cannot make this up.
"In 2012, inflated-adjusted median household income was at its lowest since 1999 — lower than during the recession years, according to statistics from the U.S. Federal Reserve. But prices go up every month, as the Consumer Product Index from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows. Thus, incomes are not increasing as fast as rent or goods prices. Millennials, even those fortunate to find a 9-to-5 job, cannot yet afford the expenses of living on their own.

Re: How's Obama doing with unemployment?
Obama! Obama!
"The unemployment rate for college graduates ages 20-24 this August was 10.8 percent. For those with a Bachelor's degree, the number was 10.6 percent while those with a Master's degree faced a 17.2 percent unemployment rate, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics," says the Huffington Post.
Thus, many college grads end up like Muara Donovan, 26, who was spotlighted in Huffington. She "graduated with a Master's in International Affairs from Columbia University in 2012. After searching for a paid opportunity and 'applying like crazy,' Donovan moved back in with her parents during the summer after graduation to work a summer job and save money."

Re: How's Obama doing with unemployment?
Keep believing those unemployment numbers.
Taxes are up, incomes are down across the board record number people out of work, but HEY!! Obama'as admin says unemployment rate is going DOWN!
"Funk at Express Employment Professionals says the drop in the labor force is masking how high unemployment actually is. "For society, fewer people working means less revenue for the government and higher outlays on social programs," he adds. "It also means there are fewer people paying into Social Security and Medicare, at a time when both programs are already running out of money due to the baby boomer retirement."

Re: How's Obama doing with unemployment?
This was perhaps the key line of the speech, with Obama declaring the effects of the financial crisis and Great Recession over and the economy moving into a period of renewed strength.
But it still might take a little while longer.
Median family income dropped nearly 4 percent, to $51,939, in 2013, from when Obama took office in 2009, according to Census data. And while the jobless rate is in fact nearly half the 10 percent peak of October 2009, the size of the labor force has also continued to shrink through the Obama presidency. That reflects some baby boomer retirements but also the frustration of workers giving up on ever finding a decent-paying job. The labor force participation rate is now 62.7 percent, the lowest level since 1978. Wages are not really growing much either. Over the last year, average hourly wages rose just 40 cents, or 1.65 percent, to $24.57 an hour.
The economy is certainly better, but the shadow of the crisis is likely to be with the U.S. for at least a couple more years.

Re: How's Obama doing with unemployment?
As we've learned since the most recent economic crisis, the inability of Americans to pick up and move for new jobs or new housing often comes hand in hand with an inability to climb up the socio-economic ladder. Now new research finds that even before the recession, black households in the U.S. experienced a stark slowdown in their mobility.

Unsourced info is awesome. I know you're just trolling though and trying to get a conversation going. This is like Blanch saying that Valentine sucks, right after he scores 25 points, has 7 assists, 7 rebounds 3 steals and only 2 turnovers in a game.The_Dude wrote:The cooked unemployment rate actually went up in January.

US adds jobs
WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. employers hired at a stellar pace last month, wages rose by the most in six years, and Americans responded by streaming into the job market to find work.
The Labor Department said Friday that the economy gained a seasonally adjusted 257,000 jobs in January, and added far more in previous months than originally estimated. Businesses added 414,000 jobs in November, the government now says, the most in 17 years. Total job gains in December were also revised higher, to 329,000, up from 252,000.
Average hourly wages, meanwhile, jumped 12 cents to $24.75, the biggest gain since September 2008. In the past year, hourly pay has increased 2.2 percent.
The unemployment rate rose to 5.7 percent from 5.6 percent. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. More Americans began looking for jobs, though not all found work. Their job hunting suggests they are more confident about their prospects

President Obama is a great American.. and it's pathetic, yet predictable, that republicans allow their blind hatred of a black man keep them from celebrating positive news for America..

yes - and that is disturbing.Turtleneck wrote:

However, I have heard some republicans start talking about the income gap. So at least the economy is improving to the point that they've given up trying to inflate the unemployment rate and have suddenly become concerned with the income gap..
so I guess it's good that they've found themselves in a position to actually pretend to care about low-income Americans.

A bunch of people pretend to care...not sure that is a step in the right direction. Get back to me when people, whether a D or R follows their name, actually care and actually want to do something proactive rather than put old solutions in new bottles.
