The rest of the world has it right. Tipping is fucking stupid. Add the cost into the bill for services provided.
I'll tip 20%+ every time unless the service was horrible, but I still think it's dumb. Tipping when no service was provided is extra stupid.

Was too lazy to drive to the original Jetts so went to a closer location. They had disabled online ordering so had to phone it in. Large light-bake deep dish with garlic crust and bold pepperoni. Added mushrooms and onions. End cost was $9.08...no tip.
Went to pick up and there were 6 other customers...most I've ever seen in the place at one time.

I tip at the take out window for pizza.
Did today when I ordered my Jet's large with italian sausage. $5.29 w/tax
Took it home, added onions, green peppers, some sliced yellow peppers and some mozzarella I had in the fridge. Reheated and instant Eugene Supreme.

The Eugene Supreme is an excellent pizza.
Work ordered in Jets for customers last week. The Buffalo Ranch Chicken is surprisingly good.

Hit the Buscemi's down the road for a couple Detroit style slices at lunch. Got back to work with them to discover one of our vendors had brought six Green Lantern pizzas in for our purchasing department. Decided to do an impromptu pizza comparison. Ravenous bunch had eaten all but about 6 slices by the time I found them. All that was left were cheese only and meat lovers. Took a slice of the meat lovers and went back to my desk.
Liked Buscemi's Detroit style with just pepperoni much better than the Green Lantern round slice. Better crust, cheese, sauce, and seasonings. Plus, the Green Lantern was overdone IMO. All the meat toppings were charred, along with the cheese.

Yes. It's gluten free. All of it. Unique taste. Glad I tried it but wouldn't try again.

wow. Didn't notice the gluten free thing. No wonder their prices seem a bit on the high side.
Tried a gluten free pizza from Dolly's couple weeks ago. Was pretty good. Also got a julienne salad which was great. Dolly's ranch is better than Jets.

Went to 900° on 23/Hayes last weekend. Pies are very thin crust, the kind where you can eat a whole 10" yourself. It was pretty good but needed more sauce. Most of the pizzas had weird topping combinations involving artichokes or capicollo or carmelized onions.

Sounds sorta like Biga near me. Biga is fucking good as hell. But the thing is that you need to know what to expect going in. Don’t think you’re walking in and getting that deep dish they talked about earlier.Floyd Robertson wrote:Went to 900° on 23/Hayes last weekend. 900° was a kinda upscale place. Lot's of interesting stuff on the menu to try now that I've had the pizza.

Would like to know the whole Buscemi's story. Locations are listed online as original yet there are other locations not listed. From what I understand they are all franchised. Guessing the individual stores need to pay to be "original" on the website. Other than that it all seems weird.
There use to be a Buscemi's on 14 Mile not far from the original Jet(t)s location east of Ryan. It's been gone for a while. Not sure why it was closed. They had great pizza and subs. Pretty sure that location was run by someone in the family.
The Rochester Road location. When it first opened was run by one of the family members. Was different from other locations. Sort of eclectic. Was like the guy tried to fashion it like more of an Italian food import store than a party shop. Pizza was good but the place never seemed to generate business. Wasn't surprised when it closed because I rarely went in there and was not the only customer in the place. Reopened a year or two later under new ownership and was transformed to what it is now, a gold mine.
Tried the 17/Ryan location a couple times years ago. Won't go back.
15/Mound is interesting and might be its own little gold mine. Hit the place once or twice a month for lunch. Much broader menu catering to different tastes on Mound's industrial road.

When I lived at 23&94 in the 80s i used to hit the one on 23 mile fairly often the pizza was good then and I really liked their steak and mushroom sandwich. I don't know any of the back story though.

Have tried the 16/Rochester mushroom steak & cheese. Was okay but not even close to Tubby's.LooseGoose wrote:When I lived at 23&94 in the 80s i used to hit the one on 23 mile fairly often the pizza was good then and I really liked their steak and mushroom sandwich. Even worse is the 15/Mound location. I like the place but they make the worst Philly cheese steak I ever had. The owner was at the checkout and bragged to me about how great it was. Said it was Angus beef they marinated in-house. Sub was so bad I threw it out after a couple bites.

My grandmas house is/was literally one block to the left of the picture. At the foot of Caspian hill. This pizza is not touchable by any other known to man. I tried to meet goose to give home a couple half baked on my way down south. This is riverside pizza in Iron River.

Might not be if you had geometry. I'll bet if you polled 100 random people on the street you'd find 60-40 or more in favor of the 2-12's.

I'd take the big one but not because of geometry, because that long narrow point is the best part of a round slice. Dammit I want pizza.

Paul Buscemi started his original store in 1956. In 1975, someone with the same last name started Anthony Buscemi Delicatessen and Party Store, Inc. Paul Buscemi sued, saying that he had the exclusive right to use the name in pizza restaurants. To make a long story short, generally a last name is difficult to trade mark but the court ruled that Paul Buscemi had the exclusive right to use the name in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties. That case was appealed and affirmed in 1980.
Paul Buscemi began franchising in 1977. That is when the "original Buscemi" moniker came about, to differentiate it from the other restaurant.
96 Mich. App. 714 (1980) 294 N.W.2d 218
I wish it ended there, it does not. This is from a 2007 article that appeared in Crain's:
The company went public in the mid-'80s under the name Buscemi's International with hopes of becoming a national chain. But growth was slow, and the company began looking for major investors in the 1990s. In 1997, the Buscemi family agreed to sell stock to Kenneth Mitan for about $1.8 million. Even though Mitan became president, he never provided the money, Anthony Buscemi (son of the founder Paul Buscemi) said, and a civil suit was filed. Mitan in turn accused Buscemi of improperly collecting franchise fees, according to news stories published at the time. In 1999, Buscemi and his family decided to force the company into an involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy. In 2000, the family pulled the company out of bankruptcy by paying about $400,000 to buy company trademarks and pay legal fees. Buscemi, 47, said those were desperate times. "We stopped growing for two years," he said. "We couldn't even advertise. So, little by little, we nurtured it back. During all of this, we never wavered on the quality of the product." Buscemi said his company survived partly because of a core group of franchisees and licensees who sided with the family and declined Buscemi's suggestion that they take down the company's signs.
Until about two years ago, Buscemi's sold franchises. Now, it sells licensing agreements instead. Buscemi said the licensing format provides greater flexibility and simplifies the process. Most Buscemi's locations are conversions of existing party stores — or liquor and small grocery stores — to Original Buscemi's Party Shoppes.
The conversion includes a one-time $10,000 fee, building and equipment cost of $20,000 to $35,000, as well as other costs for signs and inventory. After that, the company charges a flat $700-a-month licensing fee.
... Buscemi said market conditions are driving party store owners to seek out Buscemi's. That's because owners are facing rising operating costs and are competing against larger grocery stores. The result: Margins are declining, and they are looking for an additional source of revenue. Sales of Buscemi's subs and pizza range from $6,000 to $15,000 per week. Typically, about 60 percent of sales are used to cover labor and food costs, and the operator is left with a 40 percent profit margin.
Until recently, Buscemi's stores were mostly located on the east side of Wayne and Macomb counties. Next year, Buscemi's plans to concentrate the company's growth in Oakland County.
Executive summary - Buscemi's are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get.

Loui's is good. You will like it. Honestly I like Buddy's better. I don't think I've ever had a Loui's that was better than a Buddy's Detroiter but obviously everyone has their own tastes and opinions.
Edit to add - you should volunteer to pick it up if you've never been there. Dining it at Loui's is half the experience with their old school feel. Chianti anyone?
