Looking forward to the Rapture. Thanks Obama
So, if Michelle Bachman is a huge Christian, why wouldn't she be happy about the Rapture? I'm trying to figure out if I get to float up there when Iran gets the nuke Klee er weapons.
Thanks Obama, now we're all going to Heaven. Cept maybe the gays.

I love it when they say dumb shit.
Better to keep your mouth shut & let people think you're an idiot, than to open it & remove all doubt.

It's sorta terrifying that anyone takes that woman's opinion on pretty much anything with anything more than a grain of salt. Both sides. People that listen to her as some sort of authority as if she isn't stark raving mad and people that get worked up over it. She is obviously an insane lunatic.

meh.. religious people, by definition, are a little screwy (at best) - I mainly find them entertaining.Travis of the Cosmos wrote:It's sorta terrifying that anyone takes that woman's opinion on pretty much anything with anything more than a grain of salt. That's a very good question. To believe that much in a screwed up political system that you'd give good money to rich white people to piss away on a doomed campaign with the only hope of making the leading candidate pay slightly more attention to an issue or two? Very strange.

Still no answer. Is it a good thing or a bad thing for The Rapture to come?
I thought the True Believers were all waiting for it. She seems to give Obama credit for it, but is angry about it. I'm just very confused about all of this.
PLease, if you're one of the religious zealots could you explain this to me. I'm actually being sincere. Does your cult believe The Rapture is a good thing or a bad thing? I would love to know this.

I've always thought that if religious kooks were so certain that a heaven full of grassy fields, puppy dogs, butterflies and stretchable-waist trousers was the place to be, the rapture would be celebrated and anticipated with great fervor.DWags wrote:Still no answer. I try to be open minded and let people have their beliefs and philosophies born out of those beliefs.... but jesus christ almighty Christians say some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard uttered out of the mouth of any obese self-martyring weirdo.

that's sort of where I'm at - I appreciate that people are so committed to something, even though it's something I find utterly silly. They probably figure that some things I'm into make no sense to them - which is cool. I don't get offended by it the way they seem to.xsanguine wrote:I try to be open minded and let people have their beliefs and philosophies born out of those beliefs.... but jesus christ almighty Christians say some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard uttered out of the mouth of any obese self-martyring weirdo.
I like hearing people poke fun at something like Scientology.. yeah, it's weird - but have you ever stopped to think that your religion talks about people walking on water, coming back from the dead, talking snakes, etc?
it's sort of like a tallest guy at the midget convention making fun of the other midgets.

In recent posts, you have taken issue with democracy. I am curious why. Is there a better form of political decision-making? Democracy is simply about people governing themselves in some capacity. Even in the state-less society we both desire, decisions relating to politics will have to be made. Obviously in such a society the goal is for those decisions not to reflect either a tyrannical majority (direct democracy) or minority (representative democracy), but will they not be made in some democratic fashion? I understand concerns about corruption, but what form of political decision-making is immune from corruption?
Sure, we could let people make decisions for themselves free of collective decision-making. But I think the goal is to shift from state to society. Society implies social organization. Even in a society governed by norms instead of rules enforced by coercion, decisions impacting society as whole will likely have to be made. Where people make decisions themselves (independent and regardless of others) it is sounds more state of nature-like than something closer to a society of people.

To be honest, TN, I was just being flippant and wanted an excuse to post those gifs.
For real, though...
My problem with democracy isn't so much democracy itself, but the fact that I still must participate in the consequences of of that society even when there's a clear way not to. Now what I mean by that is that I'm forced to participate in the fact that there is no alternative for me to explore therefore I'm forced to exist in a world with only government sponsored roads and therefore must pay the tax. There is no other option because the government ha assumed that monopoly and that's that. I must buy government taxed gasoline. They control the businesses ability to sell that product. I must purchase health insurance... 62 million people voted and made the decision for 320 million people. When you talk about it in normals terms they're really just the mafia. There's no difference between the two. There is literally no tangible difference between La Cosa Nostra in neighborhoods like Bensonhurst or on Staten Island and the American government everywhere.
You could say that those people could have up and voted themselves but then you open up the can of worms that is how the candidates are chosen and the rise of political parties and how they completely corrupt the process by assuming a monopoly on who can even RUN in the elections for us to choose.
Then you get to open the other can of worms where the businesses with the most money get to roll up their sleeves and figure out how to get the political parties on their side... many working both sides so that they get the benefits no matter what.
There is literally nothing about that form of government that really sets it apart from the others because when you really get down to it, the people that would get all the power in the "other" forms of government that we teach throughout school about how evil they are and how good we are... those same people get the power, too, they just have to go about it in a different manner. The actors are all the same type of people, just a different stage.
I have a REAL problem with representative democracy. Specifically because of the corporate angle which was just explained in the couple of sentences before.
And then the leftovers... the table scraps, ya know... that's for everyone else when the turkey has already been carved up and distributed.
Hope you like giblets.
Society implies social organization. Even in a society governed by norms instead of rules enforced by coercion, decisions impacting society as whole will likely have to be made.
Do you have any examples in mind I could ponder?

Re: Looking forward to the Rapture. Thanks Obama
Any public good would probably work. Take water for example. Last I checked it is fairly important to our survival. Now, for you city dwellers, I realize you do not often consider how the water just magically appears when you turn on a faucet. The thing is, in urban areas you will still need to ensure everybody has regular access to clean water. Unless we are getting rid of cities, which, as Thomas Jefferson once said, "The mobs of great cities add just so much to support of pure government as sores do to the strength of the human body."
Anyway, since we are not getting rid of urban areas, that means maintaining water and sewer systems as well as enforcing norms that protect monopolization of water by individuals in society. Yes, we all dream of a society not governed by coercion but instead simple standards of behavior. The problem is that norms must also be enforced. That will require collective decision-making, correct? If you turn that decision-making power over to somebody or a group or people that act independent of larger body of people, I am not sure that amounts to the society you want. If you make it a "free-for-all," and people find their own water sources (while also maintaining sanitary conditions), well good luck with that...

Re: Looking forward to the Rapture. Thanks Obama
X, I did not even see the larger reply. Screen went to the bottom of the page when it loaded and I just saw the comment asking for an example.
First, let me say that that whole snake bite thing is terribly gross. Second, you can escape government roads. Here is one example. You will find very little government activity. Third, I am a bit confused. You reference gas taxes and say the government controls businesses, but later say that "businesses with the most money get to roll up their sleeves and figure out how to get the political parties on their side." Which is it, government subordinates business or business subordinates government? You cannot have it both ways.
As for representative democracy, would you rather have a direct democracy where a majority can do whatever they like to a minority. There are real flaws to democracy. There is no doubt about it. As I said before, direct democracy can give you tyranny of the majority and representative democracy can give you tyranny of the minority. However, we will always live in a place where collective decision-making must happen. That implies a need for a democratic.

I just think that these things can be handled by the private sector. I'm not content with the idea that the only way that water or sewage can be provided is through forced funding of one entity that controls all those aspects.
