BuzzFeed cancels $1.3 million in Trump ads
...supposedly because he's bad for their health and they disagree with him.
Interestingly liberals seem to be fine with this example of a business refusing to do business with someone they disagree with. Wonder how anyone here can align that view with the view on the bakers refusing to make cakes for gay weddings?
In April, the Republican National Committee signed an agreement with BuzzFeed to spend a significant amount on political advertisements slated to run during the Fall election cycle. As you know, we accept advertisements from both republican and democratic candidates and we were pleased to accept this advertising order from the RNC.
Since signing this advertising deal, Donald Trump, as you know, has become the presumptive nominee of his party. The tone and substance of his campaign are unique in the history of modern US politics. Trump advocates banning Muslims from traveling to the United States, he’s threatened to limit the free press, and made offensive statements toward women, immigrants, descendants of immigrants, and foreign nationals.
Earlier today Buzzfeed informed the RNC that we would not accept Trump for President ads and that we would be terminating our agreement with them. The Trump campaign is directly opposed to the freedoms of our employees in the United States and around the world and in some cases, such as his proposed ban on international travel for Muslims, would make it impossible for our employees to do their jobs.

I'm pretty stressed out about what types of political ads my favorite source for pictures of cats allows goose.

Let's simplify it a bit. Say Trump goes into a bakery in the local barrio and asks them to decorate a cake for him that says 'Build the Wall!' and they say 'No thanks, you'll need to go somewhere else'
Personally I think that's perfectly reasonable, however there is a bakery in Oregon (I think) that tried pretty much the same thing, but over a wedding cake and is now out of business and thousands in debt from a law suit.
Where do you draw the line between free speech and being over the line butt hurt, just those you agree with?

It's really more like trump asking them to put one of their signs in his window. Ads aren't cakes.
These are two entirely different things. Also, I'm not really all that concerned about the one time a cake thing happened if I'm honest with you. For as much play as that has gotten, for God's sake. The general premise that businesses shouldn't be discriminatory to entire groups of people is valid. Donald trump is not a group of people and not putting ads of his on your site (along with pictures of cats) is not discrimination.

Actually it's nothing like the cake. Homosexuals are a protected class. Bigots are not.

So you see this as a bigot issue, not a speech issue?

That can't be true. If it's a speech issue it's protected.

Is the government preventing trump from putting out his ads?
I swear it is really confusing to me how many times what "free speech" means needs to be explain on the Internet. It's really not that complicated. Perhaps we should call it something other than "free speech" so that people can stop being confused. Maybe "government restricted speech" would be a better choice.

1. The law has allowed for discrimination on the basis of politics. Why? Because political affiliation is not a protected class. A tow truck driver recently refused to tow a car because the owner supported Bernie Sanders. Seriously. It's actually kind of funny. He told her to "call the government" for a tow.

2. In the case of cake baking, we are talking about discrimination that the courts might determine amounts to a civil rights violation. For example, in 1964, the courts ruled that businesses could not use religion to deny serving African Americans.

because republicans are all for "freedom" when it comes to flag-wavin' and bible-thumpin'.. when it goes against their twisted political agenda, suddenly they're less concerned with "freedom"...Rocinante wrote:Why is this issue so hard for some people to understand?

See, TN, I could join the others in agreeing with Buzzfeed but it looks like that opinion is being represented quite well. Therefore I leave it alone
I did have to scan the previous posts to make sure I hadn't previously condemned buzzfeed for this, though.

I do not even remember when Buzzfeed snuck into the picture as legit media.
As somebody said, I thought they were mostly into curating lists of the word's craziest cats and best grocery stores.
