Does anyone dislike Michael Phelps because he spent 5 minutes at scum?

I'm as much of a scum hater as anyone. But I can't dislike Michael Phelps. Dude is just so dominant in his sport. I've enjoyed the last 12 years immensely. Hope the dude is past some of his past bad decisions and becomes a bastion of inspiration and example for younger generations.

From wikipedia: After the 2004 Summer Olympics, Bowman was hired as the head coach for the University of Michigan after Jon Urbanchek retired. Phelps joined Bowman at Michigan to train and attended classes, but did not pursue a degree.[222][223] Phelps served as a volunteer assistant coach at Michigan.[224] After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Bowman returned to Baltimore as CEO at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. Phelps also returned to Baltimore with Bowman.[225]

Sounds like he was following his coach around. But I guess I recall hearing Michigan had an outstanding swim and dive program. Makes sense they'd hire the best coach. Did he have to attend classes to work out? Or did he not attend classes and did they just make him an assistant?

Either way, to your question, who cares where he went the guy is the greatest olympian in my lifetime and I'm 54. I doubt he'll ever be topped.

Yeah I'm not going to root against the guy because he swam in a pool that's on the um campus for awhile.

I dunno about 4 years from now. I'm not sure I want to see him finishing in 4th 5th and 6th holding on too long. Might as well go out on top

Good point. But are they allowed to just say "I'm only doing one event in 2020". Or do they need to be able to do other things to make the team?
