Could David Duke have won the Republican nomination?

By my count 17 of the 18 people scheduled for the first Republican debate could have beaten Clinton.  But the right nominated an openly racist latent sexual predator and misogynist.  Its very possible if you remove the latent sexual predator and misogyny from Trumps resume, you may have a winner.  The predator thing and hatred of women may lose him this election.  Insert just (to my knowledge) an openly racist Duke over Trump and you may have a winner!  Did David Duke and the right miss a golden opportunity here?

though Trump and the establishment Republicans can whine back and forth to each other, they are directly correlated with each other.

The establishment Republicans have spent the better part of 10 years denigrating a popular president (once a nominee) for one reason and one reason only - his race. Their irrational hatred of a very decent man - regardless of political differences - gave rise to the racist, bigoted, misogynistic, xenophobic contingent that supported Trump throughout the primary. When you have 17 nominees, the pie is cut into 17 slices. You only have to appeal to about 10-12% of the primary electorate to survive the primary. That's a pretty small slice of pie.

Trump was able to tap into the contempt for America and it's ideals because he's not a career public servant - he has never performed a public service for anyone except himself. He can go back to his condo and continue living his life as a sexual predator when this is over.

Could David Duke have done the same thing? Maybe.. in today's post-Obama administration, anything is possible. The success that Obama has enjoyed has stoked the racist and bigoted fire in a large part of the Republican party. Decent Republicans like Kasich, Jeb, Rubio (to the extent I know about him) were left out in the cold secondary to the establishment-created hate segment of the electorate.

With Duke, he wouldn't have enjoyed the same popularity with the mainstream media that Trump has been given. I think/hope even the mainstream media - as disgusting as they are - would draw the line in promoting the former Grand Wizard of the KKK. However, they still promoted Trump - basically the Grand Wizard of the KKK without the official title on his business card.

It's fun now to see even Trump's supporters here run from him like they just suddenly now figured out how morally depraved he is. I suspect, if they're honest with themselves, they've known this all along - in fact, they've supported him because of it.
