Old timers, will you retire to East Lansing
Could you imagine being Greenway's neighbor? Watching him get beat up by birds would be funny, but I bet he is the kind of neighbor that you find standing in your garage with a bloody hammer on Sunday mornings.

By the time I retire, I won't have any neighbors. I'm quietly buying up all the property adjacent to my primary home, then the properties adjacent to the adjacents, and so on. Soon enough, I'll notify the city of my intent to change the name of my neighborhood from Glencairn to GreenWayLand. Or maybe The Green Way.

Yes. I plan on owning several rental properties that I will only rent out to hot sluts, and then bang them all out. It is the American dream.

I don't think there are even any shuffleboard courts in EL.

If I was I would give you a HUGE promotion.
You would be allowed to work from home 100% of the time.
You could do whatever you wanted because I would lift any job related responsibilities.
Of course you would not have to feel guilty about getting paid for doing nothing because you would not be getting paid.

Cause Saugatuck. East Lansing is great for a weekend here or there. But come on. We're surrounded by Great Lakes.

Re: Old timers, will you retire to East Lansing
I can't think of any worse place to retire than E.L. itself. If you think you will re-live the past, you will be sorely disappointed. I lived there on and off for 20 years after graduation and it gets old- at least the MSU, living in the past stuff. How many times can you go to Peanut Barrel and get drunk? If you are going to live near MSU, living in Okemos, Haslett or the West Side of Lansing or Grand Ledge is a better choice. The only thing nice about living in E.L., say in Glencarin or Bailey or even White Hills is that you can walk downtown and walk to the games if you want to. I guess whatever floats your boat but how much "MSUness" is your life about? I myself can only take so much fandom and sentimental reminiscing of the past and living in E.L. kind of makes you a prisoner to that crap. If money was no object, I could see buying a condo or house to hang out on game days or whatnot, but not there full time. No fucking way.

And as long as you have your van you don't need one of those.

If that's what you all you can think of in EL then you'd be miserable. I think retiring to EL or Okemos (near campus) would be okay. Easy access to hospitals and doctors, Wharton Center and MSU athletics for entertainment and 90 minutes to DTW for affordable airfares. More independent restaurants would be nice.
My inlaws retired to Manistique. May 15-Oct 15 is pretty good and then its slows down. They do have a small modern hospital that can stabilize you before shipping you off to Marquette if something awful happens.
My criteria is internet access, proximity to medical i.e. hospitals (Wife and I are healthy now but...) and proximity to a real airport like DTW, ORD (2-3 hrs). A college town is nice for all the entertainment that goes along with the campus and usually means acceptable internet access.

Unlikely Bodeen is capable of choosing the more mature options.

I'm just speaking in terms of E.L. itself. I don't think most of you would be happy with making your permanent home there after retirement. Other than MSU sports, its just another non-descript, high tax place to reside. But to each their own.

You can live in low tax, high fee places like Texas and Florida. Have several former customers who are sellng their places in Florida and moving back to high tax MI.
You have a dim view of college towns. I see them as places that bring in a lot of live entertainment to good venues. Its more than sports.
They decided the utility costs, especially cooling costs weren't worth it. They both picked up Jan-Mar vacation rentals to escape the worst of winter.

Forgot about about the high taxes. It's not exactly senior friendly, no matter how much EL City Council thinks it might be.

Sure I would, that way I could kick back on the front porch, watch people walk by and enjoy a cocktail while doing so. Oh wait, ELPD would be storming my porch and dragging me off to jail for having an open intox on a daily basis. So no. I'm not going to be retiring in East Lansing.

Except nope. It's always a great time walking the dog past student rentals having a party outside. They love spending a minute getting some QT with a dog and they're always quick to offer a free beer. No cops around.

If you consider retiring in Okemos/Haslett as part of the college town, I would since I already have. Love being close to MSU and everything is close - restaurants, parks, banks, shopping, etc.
My dream retirement is in Jamaica, but the CEO has nixed this idea.

I can't imagine not living in East Lansing.. where my family and I can stroll the banks of the Red Cedar hand-in-hand.. in the shadows of the hallowed halls of academia and the cathedral of Spartan Stadium.
