Re: I got this Ring doorbell
I can tell you Arlo needs to be hard wired. I had some guys painting this summer inside and they closed my doorbell wiring into the wall and patched it. I told them to, but I didn't realize that they must have cut or capped the wiring or something. No power any longer to the wires at the door. So I needed something that would work on battery power only. My old Ring from 2016 wasn't holding a charge so I bought a new Ring 3 Plus, a spotlight cam for the backdoor and an extra rechargeable battery. Pretty happy with it. It drains fast in the cold fwiw. Probably need to replace every week or so.

Thanks for the info. The battery life was a concern of mine. I'm wondering if the solar option would work. We get a lot of late afternoon sun on the surface that it would be installed.
*Looks like the solar charges for Ring are only for the lights and security cams, not the video doorbells

Weird how the cold affects some batteries. Have an electric razor that will work for many days without charging in the house. Have taken it with me in the car when in a hurry. If I leave it in the car on a really cold night, it's dead the next morning.

Sounds like a lot of work. People are required to knock on my door.

We bought a second battery, so that we aren't "blind" when it needs recharging. How fast the battery goes depends on how much motion you get within a certain distance of your house. But I believe you can also set the distance and maybe the sensitivity of the motion depending on what works for you.

I put up a sign that says Don’t Knock or ring doorbell. Just go away.

If people want to talk to me, they have to stay away.

But my three yo Ring works fine. It’s hard wired. I know it works fine because dumb fucks ignore my sign and use the doorbell, anyway.

Got the Ring 3 with the extra battery. I’ll add lights and cameras at a later time.

They are creepy surveillance devices. Unless they pick up aliens in the driveway. Then they are kinda cool.
Pretty much this. I got two nest cams after someone broke into my car a few years ago. Never look at it. I'm probably paying a monthly sub too.

Get a dog. When someone comes to the door, the dog barks.
No batteries required.

Yeah, that’s way too much to read when I get on a porch. I’m either ringing or knocking.

Lithium batteries don't like cold.

I've got three Wyze cams. One is the outdoor wireless version. They notify me when something walks by or drives by and takes a short video or I can monitor them live. I've got them connected to my FireTV so I can monitor them that way or with an app on my phone. They have sound so I can tell people to get off my grass. I charge the outdoor camera once every few months. I've got maybe $120 into the entire system. No monthly fee unless you want more than the standard 12 seconds recorded, of course you can use an sd card to do the recording yourself.

I love my Ring doorbell. Some of the things it can catch can be very eggciting.

And it’s obviously working to keep those menacing creepy clowns off your porch.

Any of you Ring or Echo people opt out the Amazon Sidewalks thing? Not very nice of them to introduce a new "feature" on products you already own and only give you a week to opt out of it.

I've been trying to opt out for weeks. That link in my app is greyed out.

Re: I got this Ring doorbell
Never heard of this. Looking at Wikipedia, the Ring Doorbells aren't compatible, which is what I have, so I guess that's good for me?
So what is the deal with it? Is it a charge they are adding, or is it just a matter of them using your device to help link these networks without telling you?

My Ring is about 3 years old, made just prior to the company being sold. It’s unlikely it’s compatible with Sidewalks.

They're basically creating a mesh network of these devices. In case your internet goes down, the device gets to use bandwidth of other devices in the neighborhood that haven't opted out. OK, great. Except things like this should always be opt in instead of opt out, and they only gave people one week to opt out. If you didn't act by 6/8, you're in for good (at least that's my understanding).
