Shooting at Ft. Lauderdale airport

9 people shot. 1 dead at Ft. Lauderdale Airport. Just being reported now.

This airport has so many cops at it, especially if it took place in the luggage area. You can't stop for more than 10 seconds without a cop telling you to move if someone isn't coming towards the car. On an average day, I'd say there are at least 15-20 cops between the terminals.

Yeah, anyone I guess could gain access to luggage claim areas at the airport. No security to get into that area. Thinking of DTW...when I get picked up from the curb after luggage claim, its a 20 yard walk from the car to inside the luggage claim area.

Well. The shooter is in custody, so soon we'll all know more. My guess is that its someone with mental issues, and has nothing to do with religion. No witness accounts so far are talking about anyone yelling anything.

Actually, terminal 2 is basically the Delta terminal. The last couple of times I was there, there was only 1 BSO car in the area. The shooter was taken without incident. It was probably about 5 minutes or so reaction time to get to him, which is a lot of time, maybe even less.
The video I watched, which I'm not sure why I did, looked like it was taken from a phone. Antiplasty, in a terminal full of people, I'd find it much more unlikely that no one taped anything, than the fact that someone has a cell phone that can record video. My phone just needs to be double tapped on one button to launch a camera, and then my thumb to start recording.

Yes. You can check a gun into your checked luggage. You have to notify the airlines. Also, why wouldn't the airlines let someone with a valid military ID check in a gun?

This sucks. I use that airport for everything, not that I fly very much. It was already a PITA to pick people up, now I'm afraid its going to be worse.
What a tragedy though. I feel for all the people that are stuck there, and the victims. There is no way this is a hoax. The only other scary part, is that BSO called in everyone. There are police from all over the county, which means the rest of the county, probably doesn't have many resources, if something else was going to happen.

I'd figure they would make you do something special with the bag, but thinking it through the logistics seem difficult to manage. It's hard enough for them to manage the way luggage is now let alone trying to track and separate bags containing firearms.

I had a lot of marines checking some HEAVY firepower in front of me before. I'm not all that well versed in identifying guns so I'm not going to be able to name off everything I saw, but they were big rifles for the most part. This was out of Dallas... or maybe Baltimore. I forget.
