The appropriate, gentler response would have been something like, "I cannot comment on specifics, but we are taking these matters very seriously and fully cooperating to assist the ongoing investigation." However, in order to be in a position to naturally and sincerely say something like that, it needs to be true.

"I'm not an investigator" does sound bitter and shady. If there was any negligence or cover-up by the Athletics Dept I hope it burns to the ground.
