Is my computer garbage?
Dell Inspiron 570
Windows 10, 64 bit
AMD Athlon II X2 250 3.0 GHz
4.0 GB RAM
My new Power Director video editing software crashes every time trying to use basic edit features. Should I buy more RAM? I think I saw they recommend 6GB
I have been exchanging messages and creating dump files with these dudes for the last week so I figured maybe I can get an actual answer here.

Double it to 8.
Never been a fan of AMD processors. I scrap it on that merit alone.

Upgrading ram is cheap and good but also download and run these two programs to delete any junk you may have

Might be your graphics card, which is likely AMD/ATI. AMD processors have always sucked. ATI graphics cards turned to complete shit after AMD bought them.
Buy an Intel i7 with an nVidia graphics card.

Re: Is my computer garbage?
Its literally apples and oranges but my first changes would jump the ram to 8gb or 16gb depending what the specs say it can actually use. I would also repalce the HD with an SSD.
If your program is crashing because you are trying to run it with 2/3rd the minimum ram recommended, the processor isn't the problem. Ram is reasonably cheap and Crucial is a reliable source.
I was starting to see slowdowns on my 2010 MacBook. I went to the maximum 8GB ram and replaced the HD with as SSD. Even an older or less than processor can muscle through with the maximum usable ram and load quicker jumping to an SSD.

Re: Is my computer garbage?
Ok, sounds like I will buy max Ram. This is the family/community computer and I never had a problem before so it seemed a little sketchy I can't run this $50 software.
I know last time I bought Ram I was buying like 250mb increments which obviously didn't get me very far. But in this case I gather I might be able to edit my videos and my kid can play minecraft and all will be good for a while.

the crucial system scanner can also recommend (in addition to the RAM) an SSD drive like others have mentioned

Highly doubt added ram will fix the problem. Would be willing to put money on an outdated video card/incompatibility issue if I thought could trust you.

If you bought your Dell stock it has a piece of shit graphics card in it. Get a new graphics card and another 4gb of ram and you'll be good to go.
I could recommend something if you tell me your budget.

Would you still say that if I can use the program to produce perfect videos so long as I never accessed the advanced editing mode?

I don't give a shit what you can or cannot do with software I've never tinkered with, muchless installed. Been out of the IT business for years. For some reason, users of any particular software expect IT people to know exactly how it works.Herbie Green wrote:The Pantry wrote:Highly doubt added ram will fix the problem. All I'm telling you is problems of your description usually boil down to the graphics card.
