Lynyrd Skynyrd: 40 years after the plane crash
10/20/77: The anniversary of the tragedy came and went here on tSwill. I blame Goose and Bob, they are our music correspondents.

And yes, IDK and IDC if there was a song posted in the 70s music thread; these guys earned a thread all to themselves. Plus, I'm a selfish but sexy attention whore.

Incredibly hot take.
Simple Man alone negates this rating.
Gimme Three Steps would be the best song for many bands.
Ronnie may have been the toughest lead singer in the history of Rock.
I loved that band.

there were multiple incarnations. .38 Special, The Rossington Collins Band, etc.gHost Spartan wrote:Not really much of a fan but I certainly can appreciate their contribution to the rock genre in the 70s. Didn't the surviving members become .38 Special?

I think the exact opposite. Probably one of the greatest bands of all time pre-crash... and just hitting their stride. Ronnie was prolific. One of the biggest "what-ifs" in American music history.

No, Ronnie's brother led 38 Special.

this is true, though it gets confusing at times. Their brother Johnny took over for Ronnie and he and Donnie have been in at least a band or two together.SawGreen wrote:Motown Spartan wrote:Worst band ever.

Yeah, both brothers took over for a bit, but neither was a survivor of the original band.

And yes, Sweet Home Alabama, was a response to Southern Man and Young's Alabama.

I'm not a NASCAR fan. I've been to a couple races though. It was ok. I'd gladly watch a race in cactus underwear for 5 hours over a three minute imagine dragons song though

if you're up to it, listen to "Ronnie and Neil" by the Truckers.. they're a very progressive rock band firmly rooted in that traditional southern gothic vibe. They talk periodically about the "duality of the southern thing" where they struggle with being very proud of where they're from while acknowledging a very ugly past.
anyway.. this tune sort of outlines how the nation viewed Alabama in the 60's and 70's versus how they grew up and the houses they grew up in.. how the nation viewed them through a prism of segregation but, within certain pockets, black and white blended together just fine.. and how Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, et al. came through Alabama (Muscle Shoals) and recorded some damn good music with the legendary (and all white) Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, i.e. the Swampers.
"now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers"..
it also speaks to Skynyrd answering Neil Young.. and how there was a feud between the two that was largely an urban legend.. word has it that Neil Young was an honorary pallbearer at Ronnie Van Zant's funeral.. some great lines in this tune about the complexities of life through the lens of race but how music can often be the great equalizer.
Church blew up in Birmingham
Four little black girls killed for no goddamn good reason
All this hate and violence can't come to no good end
A stain on the good name.
A whole lot of good people dragged threw the blood and glass
Blood stains on their good names and all of us take the blame
Meanwhile in North Alabama, Wilson Pickett comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound
Meanwhile in North Alabama, Aretha Franklin comes to town
To record that sweet soul music, to get that Muscle Shoals sound
And out in California, a rock star from Canada writes a couple of great songs about the
Bad shit that went down
"Southern Man" and "Alabama" certainly told some truth
But there were a lot of good folks down here and Neil Young wasn't around
Meanwhile in North Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd came to town
To record with Jimmy Johnson at Muscle Shoals Sound
And they met some real good people, not racist pieces of shit
And they wrote a song about it and that song became a hit
Ronnie and Neil Ronnie and Neil
Rock stars today ain't half as real
Speaking there minds on how they feel
Let them guitars blast for Ronnie and Neil
Now Ronnie and Neil became good friends their feud was just in song
Skynyrd was a bunch of Neil Young fans and Neil he loved that song
So He wrote "Powderfinger" for Skynyrd to record
But Ronnie ended up singing "Sweet Home Alabama" to the lord
And Neil helped carry Ronnie in his casket to the ground
And to my way of thinking, us southern men need both of them around
Ronnie and Neil Ronnie and Neil
Rock stars today ain't half as real
Speaking their minds on how they feel
Let them guitars blast for Ronnie and Neil
