DENVER -- A month before Matthew Riehl shot and killed a deputy and injured four others in Colorado, authorities were warned that Riehl was exhibiting signs of mental illness and could be a danger.

A series of social media posts made by Riehl raised enough concerns that police in Lone Tree, Colorado, were notified in mid-November about Riehl by a campus police at the Wyoming College of Law, according to the Associated Press.

Students had been warned about Riehl, a former student, in November and told that if he or his car were spotted on campus, they should contact campus police immediately because of social media posts critical of professors at the school.

Campus police eventually contacted police to warn them about Riehl in mid-November.

Riehl, an attorney and an Iraq war veteran, had also posted videos criticizing Colorado law enforcement officers in profane, highly personal terms, the AP reports.
