Mom charging 5 year old rent

What are your thoughts on this?

The idea is she gives her daughter a $7/week allowance. Then she charges her “rent” and has her give $5 back to her mom. Which her mom is secretly putting that money into a bank account for her.

I think it’s a great idea. I don’t know if I would do something like this. Maybe 5 is kinda young, maybe not. I see both ways. But I think it’s a new creative way to teach your kid responsibility. Although we were never given money growing up and it was required to get a job by 15/16. And then when you had a job, you had to pay for everything (clothes, shoes, food, entertainment, car, gas, insurance, etc). But that was my family.

I'm not sure. I think she could teach just as much having the kid (even at 5) earn the allowance... and use it when they go shopping, and introduce the savings concept too. How long before the kid simply says, "give me $2"?

Maybe that's part of the 6 year old plan. I definitely won't shun the attempt at building some financial awareness. I think even at 5, since the kid has been exposed to the concept, they will learn and get familiar with it.

However it happens, children need to learn the value of money and the connection to working to earn it. I got an allowance if I did my assigned chores each week. One time, when I was probably 8-years-old, I’d taken my allowance with me to a store in Petoskey. While Mom and others shopped, I stayed in front and played pinball. Ran out of money before it was time to leave, and Mom wouldn’t give me anymore. I was genuinely bummed and never played pinball again, not even in HS when friends would go to Pete’s or the place in the mall. I just learned at a very early age that those games were ultimately a waste of my money, because they offered very little in personal satisfaction. Probably why I don’t now and never have had video games at home. It’s kind of funny and amazing how a scenario like that can have a lifetime imprint on someone.

Hey you’re lucky you got an allowance! My mom said... no one pays me to do chores, so there’s no reason she should pay me. I just had to do it . But buying everything was all on our own once we had a job. I didn’t get my first car until I was 21 (first time I had enough to buy one).

That’s true. Maybe the mom will adjust it to doing more chores for money then. I don’t think it hurts at all to teach something like this though.

You could do it then. I think 5 is kinda young. But if it works it works. Not sure what type of lesson I will use. But I will definitely do something.

Probably me but I couldn't do that.

My kids all helped me out with whatever I was doing. They never got an allowance. They got paid when they helped and got nothing

So your landlord gives you the money to pay them rent? Doesn't sound realistic to me. Don't give the kid any money, charge them 5 bucks a month, and if they can't raise the scratch, out they go.
