A Self-Driving Car Kills a Pedestrian..
boy, nobody saw that coming.
(well, a least one person didn't).
Uber Suspends Self-Driving Car Tests After Pedestrian Death
(well, a least one person didn't).
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Uber suspended all of its self-driving testing Monday after what is believed to be the first fatal pedestrian crash involving the vehicles.
The testing has been going on for months in the Phoenix area, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto as automakers and technology companies compete to be the first with the technology.

But seriously though we’re going to hear stories from now until eternity about any accident that happens with a self driving car because they will still exist. What will be ignored from here into eternity is that (i think, I don’t really know this) it’ll prove to be significantly safer than having human beings driving

Bob, is a person riding a bicycle isn't a pedestrian. You of all people should know that.
Edit: evidently she was walking her bike so I guess shes bi-pedual.

Like most cyclists, I'm guessing she wasn't obeying the rules of the road.

I guess that is an acceptable quota.

Have quoted assembly equipment for autonomous vehicles. Going to be many years before they can eliminate all the blind spots in the sensors.

That’s what I was thinking too. Sure the technology won’t be perfect, but won’t it still be safer than humans driving them?

Re: A Self-Driving Car Kills a Pedestrian..
There's a long way to go with this technology. The biggest problem will be people not maintaining their cars and municipalities not maintaining their roads. Liability will force the systems into graceful shutdowns when unsafe conditions are detected. Unsafe conditions will encompass a wide variety of things from sensor malfuctions to vehicle maintenance to weather and road conditions.
Autonomous vehicles will require steering wheels and the ability for a person to drive manually in the event of an autonomous system shutdown because nobody is going to tolerate a vehicle without a steering wheel that leaves them stranded due to a system that shuts down for conditions that are only unsafe for automatic control. Tire wear and pressure, brake wear, suspension component wear, pothole covered roads, sensors getting covered in road crud, dirt, or snow, or hit by rocks thrown up from trucks that impairs their operation, etc..., all of these and more will demand an autonomous system safe shutdown. If such a circumstance occurs, what happens when there is no possibility of the system safely pulling over? Say, on a mountain road with no shoulder, or a narrow bridge, or in a construction zone?
There are simply too many variables to consider and it will take years and years of real world driving and maintenance conditions to get these systems to the point that they will remain stable under almost all circumstances. In addition, it will require changes to the road infrastructure to provide safe lanes for these systems when they need to shut down in the middle of a drive.
In the meantime, people are going to be killed by these systems. It sucks, but human technological development almost always spills blood, it doesn't mean we shouldn't pursue it. People also get killed by factory automation, and that's a highly controlled environment with an over abundance of safety countermeasures, yet people still get killed. We wouldn't stop using automation because of it, nor should we. We just do or best to learn from the tragedies and try to make the systems better. The same is going to happen with autonomous vehicles and people are going to die in the process. Whether it's safer than people driving or not, the technology will continue to be developed. Eventually, it will be safer than people driving, but it will never be so safe that nobody will ever get killed in accidents.

Video is out. It cuts out right before impact but you can definitely see the woman comes out of the shadows and the car has no chance.
Mr./Mrs. Velazquez appears to be snap facing or texting or something up until a second before impact.
