I believe he posted a link that questioned if the kid was there? Can't really remember as it didn't really affect me either way. Much in the same way Hillary Clinton got the name Hillary.
Yeah. It's pretty much the same.
Good analogy.
What affects you isn't really the point if you're talking about Goose throwing bombs on a message board.
Calling a kid Little Hitler and a liar because you want to believe he's a pawn doesn't really compare to how Hillary got her name as far as bomb throwing.
Be Best.
Great point. Saying neither affected me is definitely like saying they are comparable.
Did you know I don't like scalloped potatoes and nuclear war? Just to be clear I'm not saying they are similar. I'm just saying I don't like either of them. Hope that helps.

Trying to hold a conversation with Nigel is uh... not advised.

No. It didn't really help. You kind of missed the point.
Goose calls a high school kid Little Hitler and a LIAR (because he believes the kid is a pawn and he believes any bullshit he reads on the internet) is NOT throwing bombs (according to you).
And you support that belief because it doesn't affect you (like how Hillary got her name doesn't affect you).
Whether it affects you or not is immaterial to whether it's "bomb throwing". A comparison to how Hillary got her name is also immaterial, and silly.
Hope that helps.

Sorry the point went over your head.
Seemed pretty simple.
I won't take you for granted any more.
Hope that helps.

The point of me letting everyone know that having a conversation with you turns into an eternal loop of idiocy?

Then there is the sticky realities. Adjusting for inflation the $4900 median wage would be $45,800 in May 2018. That's $22.70 per hour. Now we have to imagine a world where all those $15-$17/hr jobs would have to bump 29% to 50%. Even with the new tax bill I don't even see major MI employers like Meijer rushing to raise their median wage to $22.70.
Want to buy a home in the time machine world?
Median home price was $9800 adjusted for inflation using the same Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI calculator is $91,600 But according to Zillow the media price for a home in MI is $138,750. How does the author's time machine work out the 51% difference?
How about purchasing a car? A new car median cost was $2100 in 1955, about 42% of the median wage. Now the median price of a car in 2017 is $30,000 that’s 62% of the median wage
Is health insurance costing workers more with employee contributions, deductibles and copays taking more than the no employee
contribution plans of 1955 going to roll back to their old methods? Are hospitals and doctors going to cut their pricing to 1955 levels?
(My cousin found the bills for her birth in 1956. The obstetrician charged $100 and Butterworth Hospital charge $145 for a 3 day and 2 overnight stay)
So if we can just convince employers, real estate markets, health care providers, grocers and utility companies to go along we can march backwards towards the 1955 utopia in unison.
These are the reasons why it takes a 2 income family to barely survive. Sure, there will always be those people who try to keep up with the Jones’ and say it’s everyone else’s fault. They’re not the majority, and the reason why it has changed so much.
You also have to factor in our lifestyle changes that are practically mandatory that didn’t exist in the 1950s. Internet and cell phones. Both are costly, and required to get by in today’s world. More of our money has to be focused into a 401k than back then. And any funds for for college are necessary for the middle class. It really adds up.

yep - cost of living has skyrocketed over the years whereas wages are more or less stagnant.Dendrobates wrote:GRR Spartan wrote:The world we get in Goose's time machine is our bankers and financiers will be RDK's (rich dumb kids) whose daddy's can write checks for those "useless degrees" like MBA's.

My mom was a secretary, Dad was a factory working. We were pretty much middle class (maybe the lower end), but we had everything we needed and a few things we wanted. However, these days, both parents can have college degrees and work full-time professional positions and really struggle to make ends meet.
of course, a lot of people (we witness it all the time) live beyond their means, which is a recipe for disaster.

It's really weird that you like commenting on stories you've made up in your head. You should start a thread having a disagreement with yourself and save us all the annoyance. I promise you it would be the least viewed yet most upvoted thread in Swill history......

Re: How to be a 1950s knuckledragger
Yeah, the 50s were awesome for getting jobs if you were a white male. You're talking about 60% fewer people as reasonable competitors for the good jobs. After all, few women or minorities are going to get a good job over you back then. And it wasn't just racism/sexism, but just any sense of ones' self. How many people got locked into being what others thought they were supposed to be, instead of being what they themselves wanted to be. This lady talks about how the 50s maintained a "nuclear family". How many people were miserably, locked into that nuclear family? Hell, how many nuclear families were held together by the business end of a leather belt?Robert J Sakimano wrote:yep - cost of living has skyrocketed over the years whereas wages are more or less stagnant.Dendrobates wrote:

But leave it to someone who never lived in the 50s to wish for a return to that (I didn't live in the 50s either to be fair). She needs to watch less Leave It To Beaver, and more Pleasantville.
Edit: FWIW, I've never heard anything to make me think that my parents or grandparents were locked in any unhappy, abusive situations in the 50s. But I know of people that were, and I'm not naive enough to think that an awful lot of people were, as well. There wasn't an easy solution if you did find yourself in such a situation.
