I think Allah nails it here.....there is no way he did this deliberately. Just a fool that used a really, really stupid term given the race he's in. Unless all of you want to claim anyone that's used the term "monkey" is a racist. Maybe my family is the only one on earth that told kids to stop monkeying around or horsing around.

It’s a total self-own in every way if it’s deliberate. Which means, to believe that it’s deliberate, you really have to believe that DeSantis is an imbecile who doesn’t understand where his own political self-interest lies. Having been blessed with a far-left opponent who may himself have difficulty appealing to centrists, he supposedly decided this morning to cede the middle by doing something gratuitously incendiary. Which would make him the dumbest Yale/Harvard Law grad to successfully win election to Congress and then outmaneuver a formidable opponent in a marquee gubernatorial primary in history.
What we have here, I think, is really a case of a narrative taking off because of its sheer irresistibility than one that makes sense on the political merits. Gillum is one step away from becoming the first black governor in Florida’s history, and he made it to that point by being a loud-and-proud Bernie-style progressive. His momentous upset in the primary last night was more significant than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s upset of Joe Crowley, coming as it did in not just a statewide race but one of the most politically influential states in the country. In the end Ocasio-Cortez’s win merely proves that the far left can win in deep blue House districts; a Gillum win this fall would prove that the far left can win even in the ultimate purple state, which would launch socialism to national respectability. For various reasons, in other words, progressives are very ramped up for a Gillum victory. And in DeSantis, a stark example of a Republican slobbering over Trump, they have a guy perfectly cast to be the villain in their narrative. A young, black socialist nominee versus Trump’s apprentice — and the latter says something about “monkeys” on day one of the campaign? There was no way they were letting this pass, no matter how incoherent the idea of a “dog-whistle strategy” is under the circumstances.

This is what I think I hate the most about racism. The fact that people are so damn willing to use it to their advantage while simultaneously screaming that it isn't real.
It's a national tradition. It's our national gaslighting campaign since the founding of the nation.

This though I’m about up to here with my hearing of the phrase gaslighting. It’s a current in word that’s now reached that critical mass that needs to be tempered. There’s others but I can’t think of them.
Anyway he didn’t say monkey around. That wasn’t the context. It’s asinine to pretend it’s the same thing but whatever who cares the people making that claim on behalf of the guy who didn’t make that claim are probably racists themselves.

I dont. disagree with the guy who says we’ve all said “quit monkeying or horsing around”
However Goose, I’m cynical enough to believe this guy doesn’t give a shit about the black vote in Florida and he’s willing to use that term to play to his trump base.

Isn't that ALWAYS the argument though? At what point do we acknowledge this country's most enduring legacy and not give white people, especially those with a platform, the benefit of the doubt. Everybody knows not to say the n word. There's no excuse for using language that has been used in the past to dehumanize black people. Come on... you know what's up.

An analysis I saw of his full comments also pointed out that:
1. He commented on how "articulate" Gillum was. We should all recognize this.
2. Said Gillum "performed" well in his debates.
From whitey's perspective, he did not choose his words poorly at all.

Yes. It's about the patronizing way that racists "complement" POCs. It's like they're talking about children, and that's not by accident.

The full quote for those that still care - and you wonder why people hate the press.
"Florida elections are always competitive, and this is a guy who, although he’s much too liberal for Florida, I think he’s got huge problems with how he’s governed Tallahassee, he is an articulate spokesman for those far-left views, and he’s a charismatic candidate. I watched those Democrat debates, and none of that is my cup of tea, but he performed better than those other people there. So we’ve got to work hard to make sure that we continue Florida going in a good direction, let’s build off the success we’ve had on Governor Scott, the last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state. That’s not going to work."
Anyone that says he's calling Gillum a monkey is simply lying. Stupid for using the term? Yep. Why? Because other politicians and the press are always willing to twist words.

In pursuit of both, an enormous number of self-described “journalists” deliberately tied DeSantis’s use of “monkey this up”—which came attached to some praise for Gillum coupled with a warning that Gillum’s socialism would muck up Florida’s excellent economy—to the fact that Gillum is black, the obvious implication being that DeSantis believes that electing a black man as governor of Florida would “monkey this up” (whatever that means). But that is not what DeSantis said. It is not what DeSantis meant. And it is not what anyone really thinks he meant, either. It is a lie of the sort that is to be expected from explicitly political players, but not from those who believe they are Woodward and Bernstein in a firefighter’s hat. (Given his interest in “context collapse,” I’m sure that Ezra Klein is penning a defense of DeSantis for Vox as I type.)

The written statement doesn’t do the actual interview justice. He hammered on that “monkey” hard. It may not have been cognoscenti, like “I’m gonna get this n word” but it was based on a real bias that he’s barely hiding under the surface. Just like voting ID acts and racist gerrymandering are.

I dunno, man. I don't have any real interest in defending this guy, but that's no reason to rush to judgment. I could envision a scenario in which he was really intending to say "the last thing we need to do is fuck this up," but being that he's running for public office, he felt compelled to censor himself on the fly and ended up saying "monkey this up" without considering the connotation.

I appreciate that you are attempting to add context, but I worry that the "context" you added is misleading when taken out of context.

I don't have any problem with the bolded comments. But I'm also not the type of person who thinks that it is automatically racist to complement a black person for being articulate, so who knows.

Re: GOP candidate for Florida Gov goes full Florida Man
I've never even heard the term "monkey this up"....
So...
But honestly it's simple math. Do code words and wink wink stantements makes sense mathematically.
Will you gain more votes by saying it than you would lose. If he inspires 10 racists to get out and vote and loses 5 black voters.....I'm sure his campaign has run the numbers.

My dad and grandpa used to say "monkey around" a lot. Or "monkey with it". but 1). my grandpa was racist, and 2). it's all about the context.

I think it motivates republicans in Florida who are/were lukewarm about this guy to really get excited about him now.kingstonlake wrote:I've never even heard the term "monkey this up"....
