"Ghosts Mountain Boys" Good read on 32nd Army division 126th Regiment made up of mostly Michigan farm boys

If you're into WWII accounts or history.  Think I might read it again.  Been about 10 years.

Pretty solid accounting of the battle of Papua New Guinea.  Long and short of it was the 32nd was tasked with clearing the island of PNG of Japanese before the effort to re-take the Philippines.  Poorly trained and mostly from Michigan and Wisconsin national guard units.  Over 100 mile mountainous jungle trek before they could engage the enemy. Very high casualty rate.  Completely underestimated the strength of the highly trained and supplied Japanese forces (Duh MacArthur).  Brutal jungle warfare. 9800 troops. Ghosts Mountain boys of the 2/126th regiment started with 900 troops and finished with 6 officers and 126 troops.
