From walk-on to hero
You're lying if you said a few years ago that Goins would become an absolutely essential piece to a Final Four run. Ok, maybe you said it, but I didn't see it coming. He has become a testament to hard work and this staff's ability to develop players. Tillman's year-to-year development has been outstanding, too. Some really great coaching by this staff from Izzo on down.

When he went up to shoot I had two thoughts:
1) Nonononono
2) That’s the play Izzo came up with?
Then it went in and I remembered there’s a reason I don’t coach or play basketball, and it’s not because I choose not to.

He wasn't even supposed to take the shot. He was supposed to feed Tillman, but noticed Zion was so far away he decided to shoot. Worked out pretty good.

That’s a great example of self-confidence and trusting your instincts, and especially situational awareness.

What, Zion was too far away? I find that hard to believe. According to the announcers, he was affecting plays from 20 feet away because we were so afraid of his presence.Floyd Robertson wrote:He wasn't even supposed to take the shot. Re: From walk-on to hero
Recruiting and life's twists and turns sometimes get a Kenny Goins to the right place.
In 2014 Izzo and staff recruited:
4* PF Jaylen Johnson from Ypsilanti who chose Louisville
3* PF Yante Maten committed to Georgia early and Izzo couldn't flip
3* F Jevon Bess signed with MSU, transferred to St Louis
3* F Marvin Clark signed with MSU, transferred to St Johns
Goins had a strong senior season, knew Izzo was out of scholarships and knew Izzo had worked to flip Maten and still wanted to play for Izzo at MSU so he walked on. If Maten had flipped to MSU who knows.

The absolute best part of that clip is watching Zion helplessly chasing Winston

Remember when Kenny G hit those 3s vs. Kansas and we all thought 'that was kinda cool'?

That was the BEST, especially after commentators were constantly gushing about Zion's speed and Cash's lack of speed. What a perfect, perfect ending.kingstonlake wrote:aualum06 wrote:[tw]1112494086580244480?s=19[/tw]

Re: From walk-on to hero
They were so far up Zion's ass, it was unreal. To be fair, though, I think down the stretch they forgot about the pre-determined Zion narrative, and really got into the high drama of the occasion for every big play by both teams.NWSpartan wrote:That was the BEST, especially after commentators were constantly gushing about Zion's speed and Cash's lack of speed. Re: From walk-on to hero
Forgetting Goins early years when he and Colby Wolleman had to defend the "center" on other's teams (mostly because of foul trouble). He worked his butt off getting owned repeatedly by bigger dudes, but he showed tough and grit even then.Turtleneck wrote:You're lying if you said a few years ago that Goins would become an absolutely essential piece to a Final Four run. Fuck those announcers - I'm sure I heard them say the tides and weather patterns were affected by Zion's presence. Well you know what he cannot affect - The Final Fucking FourMiamiSpartan wrote:What, Zion was too far away? I find that hard to believe. Ya... My kid bought what ESPN and other outfits were selling, kept going on and on about how great he was... generational, won ACC awards... My response was, he can read over his list of accomplishments next Saturday night in his dorm room... Fuck my kid.
