The Free Money thread
Holy shit there are a lot of places to get free money these days. Credit card/bank sign-up bonuses especially. Anyone an avid seeker of these kinds of deals?
Just completed all the steps for this one today: https://accounts.53.com/banking/offer/checking
Sign up, deposit $1500 (from another bank account is fine), leave it in there for 60 days and get a $250 bonus. Piece of cake

I've also gotten $450 in credit card sign-up bonuses in the past year. Just getting started with that.

Free money is always good. I don’t do what you’re doing, but I only use credit cards that offer a quarterly cash back incentive. Those are decent checks to receive, especially when you’re planning on buying big ticket items or picking up the bar tab for DWags.

I've been doing the same thing. Average around $600/year in free bank money. Also pay all my bills and buy all my groceries on the Citi Double Cash card. Those rewards add up quick.

One thing about the rewards, you are getting a cut of the terminal fee that the bank charges the vendor you are shopping at. I'm sure most places factor that into the cost of goods and raise the prices accordingly.

Telling OTPT to go to the EL Library and look for The Grapes Of Wrath was like when Red was telling Andy to go out to the field.. and find a rock wall with a big tree by it..

Still a rookie. Gonna step it up a notch in the coming year.
-Citi Double Cash, self explanatory
-Discover It NHL (this one kicks ass, 5% on different categories each quarter. All cash back matched after one year so it's basically 10%)
-Citi Rewards+ for small purchases ($150 bonus, every transaction rounds up to nearest 10 .. 10 points minimum. Lots of ~ $1 snack/gum purchases)
-Capital One Quicksilver ($150 bonus, no foreign transaction fees)

Many people are saying OTPT had to Google “What is a library?” before he knew where to go.

I sign up for airline and hotel credit cards when they have a good deal. Spend the minimum, get the miles/points and cancel.

Free $200 checking account bonus ($50 deposit, no minimum balance) after 90 days if you're 25 or under. I think I'm the only one on here now though

Open the account, deposit $100, receive a $50 bonus within 14 days. Can cancel right after the first statement, but it pays 1.8% interest and refunds ATM fees. Decent account to keep.
Plus it would give me $100 for each person that uses that link

Didn’t see your question, DWags. Both Mrs. GW and I share the same MSUFCU card.
I have another cc that I keep as a backup in case of emergency, but it’s a standard visa, also from MSUFCU. We always pay our balance in full every month, so maxing out isn’t usually a worry.

So do you cancel your checking account after you do this? Or do you end up leaving the $1500 in there? Do they have fees for not maintaining a certain minimum? Also, what kind of time investment are we looking at to open up and cancel an account?

Re: The Free Money thread
Cancelled it right after the bonus posted (60 days after original deposit). Bank manager knew exactly what I was up to and didn't beat around the bush. Asked me if I was cancelling and if there was any chance of sticking with them, I said no. He cancelled it right then and there, mailed me a check for my remaining balance, and I haven't talked to them sincesteveschneider wrote:Tim Wakefield wrote:Holy shit there are a lot of places to get free money these days. Doing my taxes and compiling all my 1099s from this year - I made $1500 this year on bank account bonuses alone.
Also racked up enough credit card points(super nice to be able to pay rent with a credit card and hit these sign up bonuses) to book 2 nights in downtown Baton Rouge for the Bama game, a free flight there, and two nights downtown EL Marriott for Michigan weekend. Plus a free flight and hotel in Dallas during spring break. Going to a Rangers and Astros game. Credit score has gone up too

Free Money, take LeBron to win MVP. It would be the ultimate LBJ move so I think it's going to happen.

Sign up for and add $10 or more to that account ^ and get $50 free, plus they'll donate $25 to charity (allegedly). Bonus took a while to post but definitely worth the 2 minutes of work to set up the account

Spirit gave me vouchers for the flights and my hotels were booked with points so I got those back. Stubhub is giving credit for the tickets too
